About the Role

The Assistant Head Coach supports the Head Coach in leading and growing our competitive youth climbing program. This role blends hands-on coaching, program leadership, administrative coordination, and communication with athletes and families. The Assistant Head Coach plays a key role in modeling team values—including growth mindset, continuous improvement, and process-based training—and ensures a high-quality, supportive environment for athletes to thrive both in training and competition.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in training and mentoring new coaches through real-time feedback and collaboration.
  • Support the implementation of team values, training philosophy, and competition strategies.
  • Facilitate team debriefs, leadership council meetings, and administrative planning sessions.
  • Serve as back-up point of contact for the Head Coach during PTO or absences, including leading practices and managing communications.
  • Travel with the team to competitions and act as point person in the Head Coach’s absence.
  • Support competitive logistics, including athlete travel coordination and on-site competition coaching.
  • Assist with team-related routesetting, curriculum planning, and special event execution.
  • Maintain current First Aid/CPR certification and Level-2 USA Climbing coaching status.
  • Stay up to date with USA Climbing rules and regulations.

Requirements

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of youth coaching experience, ideally in competitive climbing.
  • 1+ years of routesetting experience.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Ability to travel for competitions and work evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Familiarity with USA Climbing rules and competition formats.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in program coordination or team management.
  • Experience with competition routesetting and curriculum development.
  • Comfort with public speaking and facilitating group discussions.
  • Social media and content creation experience.
