COBOL Application Developer

THE TEAM

You’ll be joining a close-knit and collaborative group that takes pride in delivering smart, scalable solutions to meet business-critical needs. Our Accounting Development Team is a core part of the technology organization. Together, we support and enhance several key enterprise applications that directly impact finance operations across the company. Our team values communication, ownership, and continuous improvement, and we’re excited to welcome a new developer who shares our mindset.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Design, build, and maintain COBOL-based applications running on IBM mainframes


• Collaborate with business and technical teams to refine requirements and deliver efficient solutions


• Write and maintain JCL, handle batch/CICS processing, and ensure data integrity through DB2 integration


• Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues by breaking things down into bite-sized pieces of information


• Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous process improvements 

THE MUST-HAVES

• 3+ years of COBOL development experience in a production environment


• Strong knowledge of COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, and VSAM


• Experience working with large-scale mainframe systems


• Ability to research and document legacy code, debug issues, and modernize where needed


• Ability to adapt and be flexible with direction


• Willingness to work both independently and collaboratively 


• A team-first mindset and a passion for resilient systems


• Knowledgeable developer with the ability to train junior developers


• Open to new ways of solving problems

THE "NICE TO HAVE"s

• Experience working within an agile environment


• Understanding how legacy and modern stacks communicate


• Understanding and interpreting accounting and finance logic


• Familiar with tech stacks including Gitlab, Intellij, and z/OS

WITHIN 1 MONTH YOU'LL

• Work with the mentor to learn the applications the team supports


• Learn the basic functions of accounting applications


• With guidance, be able to make small changes using COBOL in the applications that the team supports. 

WITHIN 2 MONTH YOU'LL

• 
  

  Be able to research changes that need to be made and complete them

  
  

WITHIN 3 MONTHS YOU'LL

• Be able to effectively test all application changes.


• Be able to independently take on tasks for some of the team’s larger projects.
