Job Description - COBOL Developer/Solution Architect

At Credence, we support our clients’ mission-critical needs, powered by technology. We provide cutting-edge solutions, including AI/ML, enterprise modernization, and advanced intelligence capabilities, to the largest defense and health federal organizations. Through partnership and trust, we increase mission success for war-fighters and secure our nation for a better future.

We are privately held, are repeatedly recognized as a top place to work, and have been on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies list for the last 12 years. We practice servant leadership and believe that by focusing on the success of our clients, team members, and partners, we all achieve greater success.

Credence has an immediate need for a Mid to Senior COBOL Developer / Solutions Architect to support our AI/ML team. This role is critical to bridging legacy COBOL systems and modern cloud native architectures.

The candidate will act as a technical lead and translator, working across legacy codebases, modernization tools, and modern engineering teams to ensure accurate business logic extraction, successful code conversion, and validated operational outcomes.

Legacy System Analysis & Business Logic Extraction

  • Analyze COBOL, JCL, and DB2 components of legacy systems to understand existing business processes and data flows
  • Support reverse engineering efforts to extract and validate business rules, interfaces, and non‑functional requirements
  • Collaborate with Government SMEs and sustainers to ensure functional accuracy and mission alignment

Modernization & Solution Architecture

  • Guide modernization efforts using AWS Transform, Reimagine, Kiro, and/or Blu Age, as appropriate
  • Support forward engineering of modernized services (Java, C#, or Node.js) based on extracted business logic
  • Contribute to defining cloud native, microservices-based architectures aligned with DoW standards

Integration, Testing & Validation

  • Support generation and execution of automated test cases to validate converted code against legacy outputs

Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Documentation & Knowledge Transfer

  • Produce clear technical documentation describing legacy behavior and modernized solutions
  • Support knowledge transfer to Government personnel to reduce long-term reliance on scarce COBOL skills
  • 5–10+ years of hands-on experience with COBOL in large, mission critical systems
  • Strong experience with mainframe or AS/400 environments, including JCL and DB2
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and document complex business logic from legacy systems
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with mixed legacy and modern engineering teams

Desired / Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with legacy system modernization or refactoring projects
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern application architectures
  • Exposure to Java, C#, or Node.js in modernization or re‑engineering efforts
  • Understanding of logistics, supply chain, or sustainment systems
  • Experience working alongside automated code transformation tools (e.g., AWS Transform, Reimagine, and/or Blu Age)
  • Experience working in DoW or Federal enterprise environments
  • Prior involvement with DoW systems
  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
  • Wellness Resources
