Job Description - Coding Training Coordinator - Outpatient Oncology

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of The University of Texas M. D. SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Coordinator, Coding Training position is:
Facilitate training and auditing services for specific coding area(s) by: designing effective training/audit materials; delivering educational training and/or programs to support user duties; monitoring and evaluating the quality of coded data while maintaining institutional, compliance and departmental policies in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

PEOPLE/SERVICE (34%):
• Effectively communicate and interact with members of the outpatient coding team, management, peers, business office, and other external customers on coding-related requests
• Provides excellent and supportive feedback to management and inpatient coders for quality reviews, coding education/training, and coding questions
• Ability to stay abreast of coding updates, take initiative to assist others by sharing knowledge, and educate others through official coding guidelines, coding clinics, and other coding resources
• Responds promptly to internal and external reviews for clarification on LCD/NCD, NCCI edits, or other reviews for accuracy.
• Assist the leadership, peers, and coders with answering questions related to workflows and clarification for diagnoses and procedures.

DEVELOPMENT/INNOVATION (33%):
• Identifies educational opportunities through internal and external quality audits and ensures data quality and integrity are protected.
• Advance professional growth and development through continuing education, pertinent literature, coding rounds, seminars, and other educational forums.
• Participates and provides ongoing feedback, when necessary, on documentation challenges, potential coding compliance concerns, and opportunities for coding clinic updates/official coding guidelines.
• Actively participates in ongoing team and departmental staff meetings professionally and with constructive, valuable feedback.

QUALITY/AUDIT/TRAINING (33%):
• Produce beneficial training and education for all learning types for novice, intermediate, and advanced members of the coding staff
• Preserve and succeed in the standards of coding quality when recommending coding changes on all internal quality reviews and external quality review requests
• Provide optimal coding recommendations in accordance with official coding guidelines, coding clinics, CPT Assistant, departmental policies, official coding guidelines, and documentation within the medical record through accurate ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT-4 when utilizing EPIC or coding books.
• Complies with the Standards of Ethical Coding set forth by the AHIMA/AAPC/AHA/AMA and the regulatory agencies CMS/WHO and uphold HIPAA compliance rules and regulations
• Have clear understanding of disease process and knowledgeable in identifying hierarchical chronic conditions (HCCs). Initiate queries when appropriate

Required Education:

Associate's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.

Required Experience:

Five years of inpatient/outpatient coding to include two years of coding training experience or with preferred degree, three years of coding experience to include two years of coding training experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

Outpatient Oncology experience, pharmacology, anatomy.

Certifications/Licenses:

Required one of the following:

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) certification from (AAPC). Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Preferred Certifications/Licenses:

Dual credentials American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
