Job Description - Collections Specialist

Description

About Securityplus Federal Credit Union:
At Securityplus Federal Credit Union, we’re more than just a financial institution—we’re a community dedicated to making a lasting impact on our members' lives. With a mission of building lasting relationships and ensuring that households in our communities are financially healthy, we always put our members first. Our obsession with creating a member-centric culture drives everything we do, and we’re looking for a Collections Specialist who shares that passion.

We’re a forward-thinking team that’s not afraid to innovate, push boundaries, and have a little fun while we’re at it. If you’re ready to help us grow and transform how we connect with our members, you might be the person we’re looking for.

About this Role:

We’re looking for a Collections Specialist who will take proactive steps to resolve delinquent accounts while supporting members with professionalism and care. In this role, you’ll make timely outreach calls to correct delinquency, collect past-due payments, and encourage deposits. Beyond collections, you’ll work with members to explore solutions such as loan modifications, deferments, payment plans, and referrals to trusted credit counseling partners. You’ll also assist in monitoring defaulted loans and supporting foreclosure-related processes to help protect the credit union from loss.

If you're driven, dependable, and motivated to help members find solutions during financial challenges, this role is perfect for you.

Requirements

Managing Bankruptcy and Legal Orders
Process bankruptcy notices and petitions received from the courts, and prepare reaffirmation agreements for bankrupt accounts. Handle external garnishments and child support orders from district and circuit courts, ensuring appropriate holds, blocks, cancellations, and warnings are accurately applied to impacted accounts and loan products.

Ensuring Legal and Regulatory Compliance
Stay up to date and in full compliance with federal and state laws governing legal accounts. Examine legal documents from courts, trustees, and attorneys, and take appropriate actions to protect the credit union’s interests. Maintain daily communication with courts, trustees, attorneys, and other legal entities to ensure consistent case progression and compliance.

Maintaining Accurate Credit Reporting

Thoroughly review and process credit disputes to ensure accurate and timely reporting to the credit bureaus. Uphold compliance with credit reporting regulations and provide appropriate documentation and responses to related inquiries.

Supporting Legal Collections Efforts
Work with credit union attorneys and collection agencies to resolve delinquent accounts. Research and prepare delinquent accounts for legal filing and suit referral. Accurately apply payments to accounts and support the collections process with precise financial handling.

Tracking and Reporting Activities
Maintain and update internal tracking systems and Excel spreadsheets to support the collections workflow. Ensure documentation is complete, organized, and accessible to support audits, reporting, and decision-making.

What You’ll Bring to the Table

  • At least 2 years of experience in the financial services industry with a solid understanding of collections and financial regulations.
  • Familiarity with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and other relevant compliance standards is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and Word.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact clearly and professionally with members, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in handling sensitive account data and legal documents.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities with a commitment to finding member-centered solutions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Why You’ll Love Working at Securityplus:

Mission-Driven Organization:

You’ll be part of a credit union that’s all about helping our members and communities thrive.

Competitive Salary & Benefits Package:

We offer a competitive salary and comprehensive retirement benefits, including a 401(k) with company contributions, health, dental, and vision coverage, along with the opportunity to earn an annual performance bonus and monthly incentives.

Opportunities for Career Growth

We value internal development and offer opportunities for career progression into new roles and other departments.

We believe in work/life balance. No burnout allowed here!
