Role Overview 


The Commercial Department Director is a senior leadership role responsible for the full strategic, financial, and operational ownership of Insurance Lounge’s Commercial Insurance Department. This individual is accountable for commercial production growth, retention, renewal execution, service excellence, underwriting results, compliance, team performance, executive planning, reporting, and growth innovation. 


This role requires an experienced commercial insurance leader who has personally written, serviced, and managed complex commercial accounts and has successfully built and led commercial teams. The Commercial Department Director functions as a production leader as well as a strategic planner and growth driver, bringing forward new ideascarrier opportunities, and initiatives to expand the agency’s commercial footprint.

Primary Objectives 



  • Drive profitable commercial premium and policy count growth through personal production, team training and department planning and innovation 



  • Identify, propose, and execute new commercial growth initiatives 



  • Strengthen and expand carrier partnerships aligned with agency growth goals 



  • Protect and improve commercial retention and renewal outcomes 



  • Provide consistent, data-driven reporting and insights to the executive team 



  • Develop, lead, and retain a high-performing commercial insurance team 



  • Maintain accurate, actionable data within Applied Epic to support executive decision-making 


 


 


Core Responsibilities 





Commercial Strategy, Growth Innovation & Department Leadership 


Own the overall direction, structure, and performance of the Commercial Insurance Department. Build annual and quarterly department plans that define growth targets, retention goals, staffing needs, and operational priorities. Proactively develop and present new ideas for commercial growth, including vertical strategies, product expansion, and process improvements. 





Executive Planning, Tracking & Reporting 


Develop measurable commercial department plans aligned with Insurance Lounge’s strategic goals. Track progress against established KPIs and initiatives, identify risks and variances, and provide regular, structured reporting to the executive team. Present growth proposals, carrier opportunities, trends, and recommendations to support leadership decision-making. 





Carrier Partnerships & Market Expansion 


Identify, evaluate, and recommend new carrier appointments, programs, and market relationships to support commercial growth. Maintain strong senior-level relationships and proactively bring forward partnership opportunities that improve placement options, profitability, and scalability. 





Growth & Sales Leadership 


Drive new business production, account expansion, and cross-sell opportunities. Support and coach producers on pipeline management, submission quality, closing strategies, and complex account placement. 





Renewals, Retention & Service Oversight 


Own commercial retention metrics and renewal timelines. Ensure proactive renewal workflows are executed consistently and accurately. Oversee endorsements, audits, mid-term changes, premium finance agreements and carrier book of business metrics. 





Team Leadership & Talent Development 


Lead commercial producers, account managers, CSRs, and support staff. Define roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations. Coach, mentor, and develop team members while supporting hiring, onboarding, and production. 





Operational Excellence & Workflow Ownership 


Own commercial workflows within Applied Epic. Partner with Operations leadership to optimize processes, automation, and capacity planning. Ensure documentation standards, policy structure, and data integrity are consistently upheld. 





Compliance & Risk Management 


Ensure adherence to state regulations, carrier requirements, and internal compliance standards. Support audit readiness, E&O risk mitigation, and documentation accuracy 





Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) 



  • Commercial premium growth  



  • Commercial policy count growth  



  • Retention and renewal percentages 



  • Loss ratio and profitability trends 



  • New carrier partnerships or programs implemented 



  • Plan execution milestones achieved on schedule 



  • Renewal timeliness and service turnaround times 





Required Qualifications 



  • 8+ years of commercial insurance experience with direct responsibility for writing, servicing, and managing commercial accounts 



  • 8+ years of experience building, leading, and managing a commercial insurance department and team 



  • Demonstrated experience developing growth strategies, proposing new initiatives, and presenting recommendations to executive leadership 



  • Proven success identifying and managing carrier relationships and market expansion opportunities 



  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial insurance products, structures, and placements 



  • Extensive hands-on experience with Applied Epic or a comparable agency management system 



  • Proven ability to lead teams, drive accountability, and deliver measurable business results 





Work Location & Compensation 


This is a full-time, in-person leadership role based out of Insurance Lounge’s corporate headquarters in Grants Pass, Oregon. Competitive director-level compensation is offered, including base salary, performance-based bonus opportunities, and negotiable relocation and signing bonuses for qualified candidates.
