Communications and Digital Strategist

About the Center for Coalfield Justice:

The Center for Coalfield Justice (CCJ) fights for coalfield communities through advocacy, education, and organizing. Our approach to working with area residents values their knowledge about the land, waterways, and communities. Our recognition of local expertise is grounded in the belief that people facing injustice directly are the most knowledgeable and should lead efforts toward justice. We blend organizing, communications, legal, and policy strategies to build power with and for residents across Washington and Greene Counties.

Our mission: to improve policy and regulations for the oversight of fossil fuels extraction and use; to educate, empower, and organize coalfield residents; and to protect public and environmental health.

Digital Communications Strategist Role:

The Communications and Digital Strategist will assist with daily communications tasks and lead the development and implementation of our digital strategy, including social media, graphics, videos, and other digital media. The Strategist will help to develop and maintain CCJ’s brand through digital/visual media.

Responsibilities:

• Develop digital strategies related to all ongoing campaigns and issue areas
  
  
  
  • Manage our social media platforms, including a content calendar and development of toolkits
  
  
  • Create interactive content and engage with people on social media
  
  
  • Create paid advertisements on social media and Google to drive views and clicks 
  
  
  • Track and analyze activity on social media in order to optimize interactions and visibility
  
  
  
  


• Help maintain and manage online activist toolsets and data systems using EveryAction
  
  
  
  • Assist with tracking engagements and maintaining CRM database
  
  
  • Help draft and edit targeted emails, phonebanking scripts, and peer-to-peer text messages to mobilize supporters
  
  
  
  


• Design and drive strategy for outreach materials and update them as needed to inform and persuade key audiences and promote CCJ’s visual brand
  
  
  
  • Make graphics, pictures, and videos 
  
  
  • Develop tabling materials, with support from team members
  
  
  • Gather pictures and videos, and organize in Google Drive
  
  
  
  


• Draft and publish monthly member newsletter
  
  
  
  • Track and analyze engagement on emails to inform our messaging and frequency
  
  
  
  


• Help produce concise and effective press materials, including releases, advisories, Op-Eds, and letters to the editor with the opportunity to pitch stories to reporters, editors, bloggers, and other newsmakers


• Monitor media, summarize coverage relevant to CCJ, and identify opportunities that align with CCJ’s goals


• Represent CCJ in allied Comms spaces


• Provide support to other staff and volunteers as needed

Qualifications:

• 2-4 years or more experience in communications, marketing, graphic design or related work, with a strong familiarity with digital platforms


• A commitment to CCJ’s mission


• Self-motivated, independent worker


• Works well in fast paced team environment and respects deadlines


• Strong listening skills 


• Ability to work effectively and creatively with diverse people and organizations 


• Willingness to work flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekend and occasionally long hours


• Knowledgeable about energy extraction, fossil fuel use, environmental justice and/or just economic transition in rural communities


• Proficiency with the following are a plus:

Travel:

The Communications and Digital Strategist will work from our Washington, PA, office, but is eligible for hybrid work. 

Owning or regular access to an operating car is required. Willingness to travel and the ability to navigate cities and rural communities are required. Travel to coalition and ally meetings across the region is required. Opportunities to travel across the country for training or conferences can be expected. CCJ provides mileage reimbursement at the Federal rate and covers overnight lodging when working away from home.

The Center for Coalfield Justice is an equal opportunity employer. This position falls in Tier I or II on CCJ’s salary scale, depending on experience.
