Communications Engineer – Network Operations Division Location: Suburban Washington, D.C. Clearance Required: Ability to obtain and maintain DOE L‑Level (Q‑Level may be required)
Position Overview We are seeking a skilled Communications Engineer to support the Department of Energy’s Network Operations Division. This role focuses on evaluating, designing, installing, and maintaining communications and network components that ensure secure, reliable, and high‑performance operations across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities Network & Communications System Engineering
Evaluate, design, document, install, implement, test, and maintain a wide range of computer network components.
Support physical media, protocol stacks, telecommunications systems, and related infrastructure.
Ensure systems meet performance, reliability, and security requirements.
Troubleshooting & Performance Analysis
Provide troubleshooting and operational support for moderately complex communications and network issues.
Conduct performance analysis using network management tools and monitoring technologies.
Recommend corrective actions and system improvements to maintain optimal functionality.
Client Consulting & Technical Support
Consult with clients and stakeholders to understand requirements and provide technical guidance.
Assist in planning and implementing communication system upgrades and enhancements.
Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, changes, and performance metrics.
Compliance & Operational Support
Provide mission‑critical support aligned with DOE/NR Orders, guidelines, directives, and policies.
Adapt to evolving deliverables, performance standards, and timelines as directed by DOE.
Ensure all work adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and cybersecurity requirements.
Training & Qualifications
Maintain all required certifications and qualifications relevant to assigned tasks.
Complete periodic refresher and annual training as required by the Contracting Officer and Network Operations Manager.
Maintain accurate logs of training completion and compliance.
Required Qualifications
Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining communications and network systems.
Strong understanding of physical media, protocol stacks, and telecommunications technologies.
Proficiency with network management tools and performance monitoring systems.
Ability to troubleshoot moderately complex operational issues.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L‑Level security clearance (Q‑Level may be required).
Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting federal agencies or secure facilities.
Certifications such as Network+, CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent.
Experience with enterprise‑level telecommunications systems and network monitoring platforms.
Familiarity with DOE environments, NIST standards, or other regulated frameworks.
