The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is currently hiring for a

full time, regular/salaried and benefited Communications Manager.

Established in 1977, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is a critical component to the welfare of San Diego County, providing nutritious food to people in need, advocating for the hungry and educating the public about hunger-related issues. POSITION PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Director of Communications (DOC), the Communications Manager (CM)

will be primarily responsible for the Food Bank’s internal and external communications, focusing on sharing information with the community about our impact and services. The CM will implement communications strategies that maintain and enhance the organization’s profile in the community. The CM will also promote the Food Bank’s core services and their impact, engage community stakeholders, and build bridges with diverse communities and partners. As an organization that serves a diverse range of populations, the CM will work with the DOC to develop strategies to tell the agency’s stories in ways that respect and lift our clients’ dignity and strengths. alongside a cross-functional team from public policy, media, digital marketing, development, and programs to showcase the services, programs, and mission of the San Diego Food Bank

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Works with DOC to develop, support, and evaluate an annual communications plan and content calendar.
Works with DOC to plan, build and execute communications campaigns with high reach and visibility.
Works directly with journalists, media, and agency partners and manages media inquiries to gather stories within the community.
Develops, maintains, and deploys critical messages about the San Diego Food Bank’s services, impact, outreach, community, and advocacy efforts to various community stakeholders.
Supports the organization in further defining and developing its brand, generating increased awareness and recognition among key stakeholders.
Writes, designs, and creates presentations and speeches.
Works with the DOC to implement and maintain brand attributes, brand identity, key visuals, etc., and manages them over time to keep them current and updated.
Supports copy editing, content, and source imagery and coordinates the production of collateral pieces.
Ensures brand and strategic messaging are represented consistently in all communications.
Tracks earned media to analyze and assess impact.
Works with Digital Marketing staff to develop and create content for the Food Bank’s social media platforms and electronic newsletters.
Engages with consultants and other communications partners contracted to support the San Diego Food Bank, including but not exclusive to media, communications, and public relations partners.
Develops brochures, impact reports and other marketing materials to engage a range of San Diego Food Bank stakeholders, including but not limited to Food Bank clients, donors, volunteers, nonprofit partners, corporate partners, and civic partners.
Works in partnership with the Digital Marketing team to create videography for the Food Bank, including, but not limited to, promotional videos, interviews, check presentations, live streaming videos, news conferences, and B-roll.
Acts as a Food Bank liaison for media contacts and assists in managing Food Bank media interviews for the CEO and organization officials.
Creates media value reports (which include television, print, digital, and social media coverage) at the end of each food drive, fundraising campaign, and event for dissemination to staff, board members, and corporate sponsors.
Manages the promotion and creation of collateral for the organization’s major campaigns and special events, including, but not limited to, the Food Bank’s annual Gala, Open House Receptions, the annual North County golf tournament, donor appreciation events, the Holiday Food Drive, Summer Food Drive, Fall Food Drive, and all other campaigns and events as directed.
Manages communications assets, such as electronic filing for photos, brochures, fliers, THML, email, etc.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field.
5+ years of relevant experience in communications (company or agency).
Experience in the primary responsibilities:

Media Relations,

Copywriting

,

Consumer Literature,

Advertising

,

Branding,

Photography / Video Production

Experience in media strategy and Public Relations programs.
Excellent creative and communications skills.
Ability to work in a small hands-on team, result-oriented, team player, and leadership skills.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this role has experience managing teams that execute strategic and effective PR and communications plans. This candidate is comfortable in a variety of professional and social settings and can direct communication using methods tailored to the audience. They are motivated self-starters who can drive the organization's strategic plan.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of :

Effective communications strategies for both internal and external content.
Excellent Copywriting skills to design communication for specific audiences.
Communication campaign design to reach maximum reach, visibility, and effectiveness.
Media training to be able to represent the food bank in a variety of different media opportunities.
Media relations.
Government relations as they relate to the non-profit sector.
Local community and understanding of the diverse nature of the Food Bank recipients, donors, and community partners.

Ability to:

Create plans with specific KPIs to measure effectiveness and analyze results.
Utilize technology to produce multiple reporting outputs to monitor, track, and analyze the impact of communications strategies and initiatives.
Utilize multiple mediums to communicate internally and externally, including in person, via the media, via social platforms, website, email, etc.
Lead without authority in a team of experienced managers and executives.
Work independently and problem-solve effectively.
Exercise tact, objectivity, sensitivity, strategy, and sound judgment with various people.
Work in a fast-paced environment with multiple changing priorities without losing work quality or effectiveness.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid CA driver’s license.
Must have own vehicle as some travel throughout San Diego County is required in this position.

SCHEDULE

Typical schedule is Monday – Friday, 8am – 4:30pm.
Evenings and weekends may be required occasionally.
Position is on-site, with some flexibility for WFH

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, exempt/salary/benefited position.
A market-level competitive salary is between $70,000- $78,000 per year based on experience.
The compensation package includes a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package including: 403(b) plan with 200% employer matching; excellent health care coverage with free employee medical, dental and vision plans; company paid term life insurance; and a generous accrual of paid vacation and sick leave.
