Job Purpose

The Communications Specialist supports IBHS's mission by developing and executing communications that increase awareness of IBHS research, strengthen understanding of severe weather and wildfire risk, and inspire action to improve community resilience. This role contributes to media relations, content development, storytelling, and stakeholder engagement across multiple communications channels.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support public relations and communications initiatives that elevate IBHS research, programs, and resilience solutions.
  • Develop written content for media relations, websites, social media, Member communications, employee communications, presentations, and events.
  • Assist with proactive media outreach, media inquiries, and relationship-building with reporters and industry influencers.
  • Translate scientific and technical information into clear, engaging, audience-focused communications.
  • Support brand messaging, storytelling, and thought leadership efforts that increase visibility and impact.
  • Partner with internal subject matter experts and external organizations on integrated communications campaigns and initiatives.
  • Monitor media coverage, track communications performance metrics, and prepare reports on campaign effectiveness.
  • Support Member and employee engagement efforts through effective communications and content development.
  • Ensure all communications align with IBHS brand standards, messaging, and AP Style guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in an office environment with occasional travel, field work, or event support. Some evening and weekend work may be required to support communications initiatives or time-sensitive events.

This position is primarily sedentary and requires prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, reading, writing, and verbal communication. The employee may occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 10 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.



Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Three (3) or more years of professional communications, public relations, or media relations experience.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting nonprofit, scientific, research, insurance, or resilience-focused organizations.
  • Experience with media monitoring and communications tools such as Cision, Meltwater, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media management, analytics, and digital communications.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or multimedia production tools.
