Community Advocate

The Community Advocate plays a vital role in supporting survivors of sexual violence by strengthening institutional responses and improving access to trauma-informed systems. This position focuses on professional training, institutional advocacy, and community-wide awareness promotion. The Community Advocate coordinates and delivers trainings and presentations to multidisciplinary partners, builds strong community relationships to create effective referral pathways, and participates in outreach activities that increase public awareness of sexual violence and available advocacy services. 

A typical day in this role is anything but typical. You might be presenting to emergency room staff, first responders, law enforcement, prosecutors, educators, or social service professionals, helping improve survivor-centered responses within their institutions.  You’ll also attend case review meetings to identify trends, gaps, and systems issues, and help address them through targeted professional training and advocacy efforts. 

Because each audience is different, the Community Advocate must be able to develop strong training outlines and adapt instructional methods to meet the needs of each group while ensuring content remains survivor-centered, culturally responsive, and aligned with organizational standards. You’ll collect and review evaluations to strengthen training delivery and long-term impact, and you’ll provide written materials and educational resources when appropriate. Just as important, you’ll build and maintain relationships with libraries, agencies, and agency partners to strengthen survivor referrals and promote accountability across the community. This role also supports awareness promotion activities and helps co-coordinate Sexual Assault Awareness Month efforts, while collaborating with the Community Engagement team to organize and facilitate events.

You might find yourself presenting an educational program, providing training to a local business or organization, researching and brainstorming, or planning an upcoming community event. The pace is fast, and you'll be pivoting from one task to another, making it perfect for those who thrive on variety and challenge. To excel in this role, you must be confident speaking in public, have a proven track record of delivering effective presentations, and be skilled in interpersonal, verbal, and written communication. The ability to maintain confidentiality, exude emotional intelligence, and have a positive attitude is also crucial. The right applicant will be highly organized and able to work independently to meet deadlines.

Previous experience as an educator or in a similar role is required. You must also be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; experience in Canva is not necessary but is a bonus. You should also have reliable transportation, a valid Driver's License, and the ability to travel as we provide services in Kankakee, Iroquois, and Ford counties. Bilingual candidates may be eligible for additional compensation.
