Job Description - Community Learning Coordinator

Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness (WPHW) is growing, and we are excited to be adding new people to our team!  If you value inclusivity, balance, and cultural centeredness and have a true passion for serving others, you may be a great fit for our team!  WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities:  the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation.  Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share.  Services are available to community members living on and off-reservation across the State of Maine.


Position Summary:


The Community Learning Coordinator will facilitate cultural programs, language classes, promote and support educational opportunities, training, and events. Strengthening cultural identity and promoting connection are proven strategies that promote positive mental health and reduce suicide and substance use within the communities.  



Duties and Responsibilities:


Suicide Prevention Programming: 



  • Provide assistance to the Community Learning Manager to plan and coordinate suicide prevention activities and trainings for youth and families, emphasizing the role of cultural and traditional knowledge in programming.

  • Research national evidence-based practices and tribal best practices to determine best models for adaptation

  • Determine programming options to meet grant deliverables; work with the Community Learning Manager on developing new programming options.

  • Assist with the coordination of the youth, veteran, and elder engagement and suicide prevention activities and events

    Training and Events: 



    • Assist with the development, coordination, and design of trainings to community members

    • Assist with the development, coordination, and planning of community events that help to increase a sense of community and connection

    • Assist with the management of supplies and inventory for Trainings and Events.

    • Contribute to WPHW’s website and social media initiatives, participate in outreach activities, assist with other programming as needed, and participate in WPHW planning and visioning

    • Assist the Community Learning Manager in finding appropriate professional development opportunities for staff; attend trainings and engage in professional development opportunities




    Grant Management and Evaluation:



    • Assist the Community Learning Manager in monitoring and managing the collection of detailed weekly summary reports of all activities performed by WPHW staff

    • Coordinate the procurement of supplies and other needs for the WCCC; work with operations to follow appropriate procurement procedures

    • Provide assistance with the completion of grant reports

    • Provide assistance and coordination of collecting event and meeting data; work with Community Learning Manager and RECAST managers on efforts; monitor and manage the collection of detailed monthly summary reports of all activities performed by staff


    • Perform other duties as assigned.









    Education and Experience Required:



    • University degree or college diploma in public health, health, education, or a related field AND two (2) years previous experience OR

    • Six (6) years of experience in public health, health, education, youth-serving profession, or a related field

    • Experience working in Tribal Communities

    • Experience working with youth


      



      Skills and Qualifications Required:



      • Understanding of Social/Emotional Development

      • Program development and project management experience

      • Open to new ways of thinking about youth programming and prevention

      • Excellent organization and communication skills

      • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple competing projects

      • A strong work ethic and enthusiasm

      • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently 

      • Must pass criminal background check.
