Job Title: Community Learning Librarian

Classification: Professional 

Location: LPCPL Exchange

Reports To: Learning Services Manager

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Grade: I

JOB PURPOSE

Supports the day-to-day operations of LPCPL Exchange makerspace and other related services. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Stays current on fabrication technologies and equipment and provides recommendations on integration into current practices
  • Conducts orientations, demonstrations, and authorizations for new makers, staff, volunteers and interns about equipment and technology
  • Plans, conducts, and promotes library classes and events with a focus on makerspace tools and STEAM
  • Supervises and manages the work of volunteers and interns related to programs, classes, events, and other special projects
  • Provides technical expertise to new makers, staff, and volunteers on the use of tools, equipment, and software; assists with training student interns as well as assign tasks that build and craft their technical skills
  • Aids makers in completion of projects associated with courses, independent projects and group activities
  • Performs daily safety supervision and enforcement of written policies for use of the Library’s digital and makerspace facility by makers and staff
  • Performs inventory operations
  • Creates a safe and clean environment for customers and staff, and monitors and reports issues with cleaning, mechanical systems, and building issues
  • Initiates the accident/incident report when necessary; ensures information is complete and accurate and forwards report to appropriate parties
  • Collaborates closely with staff to support evolving curricula through training and the adoption of new software, tools, and equipment
  • Contributes technical expertise and supports equipment in other Library facilities as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned or required
  • Applies Code of Conduct policy consistently with all customers
  • Abides by established policies and procedures

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • You have a Masters of Library Science degree and an Indiana Library Certification Level 3, OR 
  • You have a Bachelor degree and 1 year or more experience with makerspace or similar facilities, and willingness to obtain an Indiana Library Certification Level 4 within 3 years
  • Technical knowledge of professional fabrication, sewing equipment, and a wide range of makerspace media software, and knowledge of appropriate diagnostic tools to solve technical and equipment issues preferred
  • Knowledge of installation and use of digital makerspace software including Adobe Creative Suite or similar open-source, Autodesk, Tinkercad, SketchUp preferred
  • You are comfortable and confident working in an environment with a variety of hardware devices and software products, and willingness to learn new technologies
  • You have the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues including 3D printers, hand and stationary tools, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, laser cutter/engraver, desktop CNC
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate clearly processes, explain terms, concepts and technology, and assign responsibility and provide feedback
  • You have excellent presentation and demonstration skills
  • You have the ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving
  • You have the ability to investigate current technologies used in the industry
  • You have a valid Indiana driver’s license 
  • You work a varied work schedule 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Mobility: Frequently lifts and carries 10-50 pounds; occasionally pushes/pulls 50+ pounds using cart; regularly sits and stands to do work; occasionally kneels, squats, bends, twists, grasps, and reaches above shoulders to move materials
  • Works in a well-lit and adequately ventilated environment requiring the observance of safe work practices, fire regulations, and avoidance of falls, trips, and similar shop/lab hazards
  • Environmental exposures: exhaust fumes, odors, dust particles while cleaning various equipment; temperature fluctuations; noise level is moderate normally; louder noise levels during use of makerspace equipment
  • Works around moving machinery including 3D printers, laser cutting, sewing, electronics, lathes, and the use of basic hand tools in a lab or educational setting 
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): gloves, goggles, masks, and weather protection
  • Office environment; exposure to materials returned in unfavorable conditions
  • Vision abilities include: close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception
  • Must be able to respond to fire alarms, warning sirens, and phone pages
