Job Description - Computational Mechanics (FEA) Engineer

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.

The Role

We have an opportunity for an engineer to join Thornton Tomasetti's Applied Science team. You will perform essential work for our clients utilizing commercial and bespoke finite element analysis (FEA) software to solve their real-world challenges, with a strong focus on advanced FEA. In addition, you will contribute to the development of custom pre- and post-processing tools that enhance how client's interface with these FEA tools and interpret results. You will work in a collaborative environment that will challenge you intellectually and grow your career path through learning a suite of bespoke and commercial software, while expanding your software development capabilities, and sharpening your command of solid and fluid mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics. You will be a key technical contributor to a combination of our work with defense, infrastructure, and/or energy-related clients. This role is intended to be fluid in the nature of client work; we seek potential applicants that are excited about learning something new and being able to pivot into new areas as opportunities arise.

More information on the Applied Science team can be found here: Applied Science Practice | Thornton Tomasetti

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced analysis and research on engineering and scientific problems, using a combination of engineering level tools and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess the vulnerability of structures to a variety of extreme loads.

  • Design engineering solutions to protect structures against the effects of extreme loads and investigate root causes of structural failures.

  • Work within a team of professionals to address these wide ranges of problems. Manage your individual tasks and responsibilities by working with team members to produce meaningful and innovative solutions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in structural or mechanical engineering - or equivalent, with a track record of academic achievement. Coursework in FEM/FEA, structural dynamics, and mechanics of materials are expected.

  • 0-2 years of professional experience in engineering mechanics, structural dynamics, and FEA.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, R, C++

  • This position is expected to work on US government projects in some capacity. As part of the US government contract requirement, all project staff must be able to secure US security clearance. US security clearance requires the applicant to be a US citizen.

Compensation

The rate for this position generally is $80,000 - $90,000 annually.  Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted by District of Columbia Equal Pay Transparency Law. Compensation offers will be based on various factors, including operational needs, individual education, qualifications and experience, work location and comparison to employee already in the role, as well as other considerations permitted by law. A potential new employee’s pay history will not be used in compensation decisions.
