The Plant Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, fabricating, and improving ready-mix concrete plant equipment and facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This position performs preventive maintenance, welding, mechanical repairs, equipment inspections, emergency breakdown response, and facility upkeep across all SL&C concrete plant locations. The Plant Maintenance Technician works closely with Operations, Dispatch, Quality Control, and Plant Supervisors to minimize downtime and maintain production readiness. Duties are supported by plant-specific maintenance schedules and inspection programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plant Equipment Maintenance
Perform routine inspections, servicing, repair, and preventive maintenance on concrete batch plant equipment.
Maintain plant manufacturing equipment in a state of operational readiness.
Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and material-handling systems.
Inspect and maintain air compressors, air dryers, oilers, dust collectors, conveyors, aggregate gates, scales, vibrators, augers, gearboxes, and batching systems.
Monitor equipment performance and proactively identify repair needs to avoid unscheduled downtime.
Complete assigned work orders accurately and timely.
Respond to emergency breakdowns and critical repairs as needed.
Welding and Fabrication
Operate welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, and fabrication tools safely.
Fabricate, repair, and modify steel structures, chutes, hoppers, brackets, supports, guardrails, conveyors, and plant equipment.
Repair worn components and reinforce equipment to extend service life.
Perform structural welding in accordance with company safety standards and hot work procedures.
Maintain welding equipment and related tools in proper working condition.
Plant Inspection Program
Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual plant inspections.
Inspect:
Air systems
Dust collection systems
Conveyors
Gearboxes
Aggregate bins
Cement, fly ash, and slag systems
Loadout equipment
Pressure washers
Sump pumps
Plant lighting
Yard lighting
Batch plant structures
Document inspection findings and report deficiencies requiring corrective action.
Facility & Grounds Maintenance
Assist with plant housekeeping and maintenance projects.
Repair fencing, walkways, handrails, stairs, and structures.
Remove material buildup around batch plants and equipment.
Assist with painting, sandblasting, concrete removal, and general plant appearance projects.
Maintain tools, work areas, maintenance vehicles, and storage locations in an organized condition.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA regulations.
Adhere to hot work permitting requirements for welding and cutting activities.
Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses.
Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and accident-prevention efforts.
Communication & Team Support
Coordinate maintenance activities with Operations, Dispatch, QC, Plant Supervisors, and mechanics.
Assist plant personnel in completion of maintenance-related tasks.
Work collaboratively with vendors, contractors, and equipment suppliers.
Provide recommendations for improving plant reliability and efficiency.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High School Diploma or GED required.
Three to five years of industrial, construction, aggregate, manufacturing, or concrete plant maintenance experience preferred.
Experience with welding, fabrication, mechanical repair, industrial equipment maintenance, or millwright work preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to read maintenance manuals, equipment drawings, and safety procedures.

Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, crouching, and lifting.
Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders, stairs, catwalks, silos, and elevated work platforms.
Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, dust, and varying weather conditions.
Ability to work around moving equipment and industrial machinery.
Work Schedule
Regular schedule as assigned.
Overtime, call-outs, weekends, early mornings, evenings, and emergency repairs as operational needs require.
