Job Description - Construction Operator

General Summary:


                                                                                                    


The Construction Operator assists in all phases of construction including but not limited to: heavy equipment operation, performing routine equipment checks and maintenance, loading and unloading equipment, keeping work sites clean, and ensuring equipment is safely powered off and stored. Successful candidate must be exceedingly well-organized, motivated, possess a strong work ethic, and enjoy the day-to-day challenges of construction operations. The Construction Operator will follow safety regulations and be able to take instructions. Additionally, the successful candidate will possesses the ability to positively interact with the public and staff in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, while remaining calm, focused, resourceful and efficient.




Essential Job Functions:


 



  • Assists in all phases of construction including but not limited to heavy equipment operation of backhoe, mini excavator, and a variety of directional boring machines

  • Ensures all equipment is maintained and used in accordance with company safety regulations

  • Ensures equipment is properly positioned before turning it on and off, or loading and unloading

  • Performs routine and preventive equipment maintenance and regular safety checks on equipment

  • Ensures sites are kept clean and safe

  • Maintains current industry knowledge by utilizing various resources and attending training to ensure responsible equipment operation

  • Works with safety awareness of the considerable hazards related to construction and maintenance

  • Uses protective equipment and safety practices.

  • Regular, reliable, consistent and punctual attendance is required

  • Responsible for duties as described in the general summary and any/all other duties as assigned by manager and/or supervisor




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:                                                             


 



  • Knowledge of basic electronics, digital technology, and preventive maintenance

  • Ability to follow company policies and procedures

  • Skill in operating various heavy machinery and construction equipment

  • Basic writing skills to accurately complete reports and other paperwork

  • Ability to communicate with co-workers, customers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating and maintenance instruction manuals

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail

  • Ability to evaluate, test and repair sophisticated equipment

  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions using information at hand

  • Ability to effectively function as a team player

  • Ability to perform duties in a safe, professional manner

  • Highly motivated and a self-starter with willingness to learn

  • Possess good driving record and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)




Education and Experience:   


 


A high school Diploma/GED. License: Valid and clear driving record required. A current CDL license and previous equipment operating experience required.




Physical Requirements:



Seeing: Must be able to read computer screen and various reports. Must have good visual perception and be able to distinguish between colors. 75-100%



Hearing: Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with employee and industry contacts. 75-100%



Standing/Walking: 75-100%



Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: 75-100%



Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: Up to 70 lbs. 75-100%



Fingering/Grasping/Feeling: Must be able to write, type, and use phone system. 75-100%




Working Conditions:


 


This factor measures the surroundings or physical conditions under which a job must be done and the extent to which those conditions make the job disagreeable.  Consider the presence and relative amount of exposure to dust, dirt, heat, fumes, contaminants, cold, noise, vibration, wetness, etc.
