Position Guide
1.0 FUNCTIONAL ROLE
The basic function of Contractor Sales person is customer satisfaction. In this
Process, it is believed that sales will result.
2.0 REQUIREMENTS
Education Required:
1. High School or Vocational School Graduate.
2. The use of analytical and observational skills which demonstrate an ability to make sales happen. Excellent people skills and the ability to communicate well with customers and fellow employees. Language ability includes reading, writing, spelling and the ability to communicate clearly on technical and business topics in the English language.
Preferred:
1. College graduate in Business or Sales and Marketing or extensive experience in the hardware industry or related business.
2. Able to read and understand construction blueprints and ability to convert that knowledge into a building material list.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1. Know and perform the Eight Steps of Customer Service
3.2 Stock and maintain assigned area of store
3.3 Answer phones
3.4 Complete customer sales and returns
3.5 Continue to grow and expand product knowledge
3.6 Maintain communication between other sale clerk and departments
3.7 Keep updated on new technology and products in the hardware and building industries
3.8 Have understanding of competitors and their practices
3.9 Be a team player and foster a team atmosphere.
4.0 PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
4.1 Body Positions: Standing, sitting, and walking
4.2 Body Movements: Carrying items, use of hands, vision, arms and voice.
4.3 Lifting: Able to lift 50lbs.
4.4 Working Conditions: Office environment including frequent trips outside to assist customers with specific items. The yard area is subject to various environmental conditions.
4.5 Reporting Relationships: The Contractor Sales person reports to Manager & Assistant Manager.
5.0 DUTIES
5.1 Greet customers.
5.2 Identify customer needs.
5.3 Share knowledge of uses and products for their project.
5.4 Ask customers for other items needed for the project.
5.5 Inform customers of something extra about the store, such as current flyer, manager’s special and upcoming sales.
5.6 Thank customers for coming in and for their business.
5.7 Never tell a customer no. Ask an associate for confirmation or find an alternate product.
5.8 Finish the Sale! When transferring the customer to another associate/yard
personnel introduce them to each other.
5.9 Maintain the profit objectives as they come from management's goals and objectives.
5.10 Be willing and able to expand product knowledge and uses. This includes attending product knowledge meetings, huddles, keeping informed and updated on products.
5.11 Possess a working knowledge of Gold Beach Lumber’s Price Match Guarantee.
5.12 Maintain excellent and courteous relationships with all other company employees.
5.13 Maintain a positive attitude at all times.
5.14 Identify slow movers. Make an effort to sell those items by changing the location, discount the price or promotional pricing.
5.15 Answer phone by third ring courteously even while with a customer. The phone call could be the store’s next sale!
5.16 Complete and verify all paperwork assigned in a timely manner.
5.17 Perform cycle counts as assigned to ensure all items are counted accurately in a timely manner.
5.18 Perform assigned housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping in your assigned area. Ensure all products are in correct location, properly tagged and signed, clean and dust free. Keep the floor clean and clear of merchandise.
5.19 Actively seek to relieve management and office personnel of sales transactions by offering to take over sales process.
5.20 When performing cashier duties, ensure accuracy in ringing up the sale and cash is exchanged correctly. If a charge account, confirm it is the correct account and job complete the transaction accurately. Verify the person at counter is on the signers list and if not, call for approval to complete the sale.
5.21 Receive payment on accounts (ROA). Correctly within terms.
5.22 Follow through from start to finish with each customer. This may include handing off to other clerks/ yard personnel and if so, introduce to customer.
5.23 Self manage time clock to ensure no overtime is acquired and no staff shortage is created.
5.24 Understand company policy when selling into the negative, follow proper procedure to ensure counts are corrected.
5.25 Process merchandise returns if product meets the proper criteria. Verify product is in good resalable condition also facilitate returns to vendor.
5.26 Create purchase orders for special order items, attach confirmation and review for accuracy and completeness in a timely manner.
5.27 Have knowledge and ability to properly take an order for delivery, with proper fees as set by company policy.
5.28 Communicate effectively with contractors, have a working knowledge of construction consumption of products from foundation to finish.
5.29 Communicate effectively with yard personnel regarding information for orders and delivery commitments.
5.30 Maintain a working knowledge of building permits in Curry and Del Norte county.
5.31 Ensure proper information is gathered for estimates:
A. Start date.
B. Budget
C. Jobsite address
D. Ask for the order!
E. Proper contact info
5.32 Once submitted all estimates must be contacted within 48 hours to determine our position, remind customers of our price match guarantee.
5.33 Understand computer process to search orders and special orders. Obtain the knowledge to identify whether paperwork is correct. Have the ability to complete transactions and collect payment or charge to customers account.
5.34 Ensure that nothing leaves the store without being paid for or invoiced.
5.35 Maintain appropriate attire and have name visible on apparel.
5.36 Maintain company policies as written in handbook.
5.37 Represent Gold Beach Lumber Yard Inc. in a professional manner at all times.
5.38 Employee must respect the confidentiality of the company and staff members. Confidential information should never be disclosed.
5.39 Building material sales personnel is not limited to the above task. The employee may be asked by a supervisor to assist in other duties whenever necessary.
