We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Controller to join our team. This is a key leadership role responsible for managing day-to-day finance operations, payroll, compliance, and reporting, while also helping shape financial strategy through insights and recommendations. The ideal candidate brings professionalism, integrity, and a team-first mindset and thrives in a fast-paced, construction-driven environment. As you know, payroll is a complex role that requires someone confident in managing it.
This is a full-time, exempt role based onsite in Escondido, Monday through Friday from approximately 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with additional hours as needed.
Candidate must reside in North County San Diego or be able to commute daily to Escondido.
Key Responsibilities
Lead monthly financial reporting, reconciliation, and compliance processes
Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
Oversee weekly payroll, including prevailing wage requirements, deductions, and benefits reporting
Manage labor compliance for prevailing wage subcontractors
Monitor insurance, fringe, and benefits reporting; investigate and resolve discrepancies
Handle tax filings, audits, and regulatory reporting requirements
Manage month-end close and year-end financial activities
Collaborate with HR and Operations on labor planning, reporting, and workforce compliance
Support accurate job-cost tracking and adjustments
Oversee asset management and annual reporting tasks
Supervise payroll/accounting team members and support their development
Perform other duties as needed to support the business
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
5+ years of experience in a construction environment, with a strong background in payroll, prevailing wage, and WIP reporting
Proficient in reconciliation, job costing, payroll, AR/AP, asset management, and financial reporting
Experience supervising accounting/payroll team members
Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential data with care
Excellent communication skills across all levels of the organization
Able to work collaboratively across multiple departments
Must be based in North County San Diego or able to commute to Escondido daily
Schedule: Full-time, on-site, Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM 3:30 PM (additional hours as needed)
Drug screen and background check required
Working references must be provided
Pay & Benefits
Salary Range: $110,000 $160,000/year (DOE)
