Job Description - Controller


 Saint Philip the Apostle Catholic Church located in Franklin, TN,  seeks qualified candidates for the position of Controller. This position is responsible for accounting, analysis and reporting functions within Parish. In addition, this position supervises the Finance team (Sr. Accountant, Accounts Payable Analyst, Cash Receipts and Records Analyst). It will be responsible for providing quality control over accounting operations and to ensure reporting accuracy. This role should be able to step in to provide back-up for the roles in which it supervises. 


Requirements

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

  1. Ensure that defined internal controls are maintained to ensure appropriate Stewardship.
  2. Prepare financial reports for the monthly Finance Board meeting.
  3. Provides an accounting of parish fiscal activities and status.
  4. Ensures that all reports are prepared accurately and submitted timely, e.g., monthly finance board reports, quarterly ministry      reports, etc.
  5. Prepares assessment reporting, including upcoming fiscal year budgets for church and submits annually to the Diocese.
  6. Provides timely analysis of unusual items, reviews monthly financial statements for reasonableness and accounting accuracy.
  7. Prepares quarterly statement for ministry chairpersons and parish council.
  8. Reviews of financial reports (A/R Billing and receipts, monthly journal entries, etc.) on a monthly (or as-needed) basis.
  9. Prepares end of year financial reports for parish.
  10. Oversee the sourcing of information to prepare the annual parish budget.
  11. Provides input for all aspects of the annual budget.
  12. Supervises the reconciliation of all checking accounts for church monthly. Provides Administration with an accounting of the status of the checking accounts at month end.

Education and/or Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  2. CPA
  3. Practicing Catholic is preferred.
  4. Minimum ten years of accounting and supervisory experience
  5. Previous experience in the preparation of non-profit financial statements is preferred.
  6. Demonstrated familiarity with financial accounting programs including G/L, A/P & A/R
  7. Required proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and the ability to use the imbedded Microsoft product tools/functions to extract and manipulate data.
  8. Familiarity with Sage is a plus

Additional Skills or Requirements:

  1. Computational aptitude and attention to detail and accuracy required.
  2. Experience using office machines such as computer, calculator, copier, etc.
  3. Must have ability to maintain confidentiality.
  4. Must have strong organizational and time management skills, including ability to multi-task
  5. Good verbal, written, telephone and interpersonal skills
  6. Ability to work with a variety of people
  7. Self-motivated with willingness to work under minimal direction and supervision
  8. Must be willing to submit to and satisfactorily complete a criminal background screening and to review diocesan Safe Environment training
