The St. John’s Ministries team has an opening for a Controller. The number of people experiencing homelessness or housing instability has risen and we are looking for a person that is mission-driven to undertake all aspects of financial management. This role is part of a supportive team that prioritizes each person’s wellbeing.
Position Overview
The Controller is a critically important position responsible, along with the Finance Committee and Board of Directors, for the financial health and wellbeing of the organization. The Controller oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization’s finances and is responsible for all accounting and bookkeeping functions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management: Oversee all aspects of financial management, including financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
Accounting Policies: Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
Budget Administration: Administer the annual budget process; report significant budget differences to leadership.
Cash Flow Management: Prepare cash flow projections; review and recommend efficient purchasing and spending practices.
Financial Analysis: Conduct thorough financial analysis to support business decisions.
Financial Reporting: Manage the preparation and review of financial reports and reconciliations, including updating schedules and preparing journal entries.
Cash Handling: Ensure adherence to cash handling and management policies.
Accounts Payable: Oversee the accounts payable process.
Payroll Management: Oversee the bi-weekly payroll process using BambooHR Payroll; ensure accurate pay and withholding of employee benefits and garnishments; create journal entries for posting to the general ledger; prepare quarterly Multiple Worksite Report.
Audit Coordination: Work with external auditors; provide necessary information for the annual audit; review audit and make recommendations to the Finance Committee for final approval.
Tax Reporting: Review required tax returns, including Form 990, and produce other tax reports as needed.
Worker’s Compensation Audit: Oversee the annual Worker’s Compensation Audit.
Restricted Donations: Maintain accurate accounting for receipt and use of restricted donations.
Insurance and Contracts: Procure business and property insurance; maintain business agreements and contracts for services such as waste removal and copier leases.
Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field .
Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting experience.
CPA preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks Online.
Demonstrated leadership experience.
Comfortable around those with issues such as mental health, substance abuse, trauma, low-income and/or homeless populations, and/or healthcare preferred.
Passion for the mission and population served by St. John’s Ministries.
Work Environment
Hybrid or on-site work depending on organizational needs.
Occasional evening or weekend hours for events or urgent matters.
Operate in a professional office environment using standard office equipment.
Follow safety protocols, including the use of PPE, to minimize health risks.
Cleaning supplies are utilized to help prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses, ensuring a healthier environment for everyone.
Physical Demands
Prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally (e.g. office supplies, small packages).
Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within the office environment.
