Controller

The Controller is responsible for leading the organization's accounting and financial operations while ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. This position oversees the day-to-day accounting function, manages financial reporting, maintains strong internal controls, and develops the accounting team.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller serves as a strategic partner to the CFO and executive leadership, providing financial insight and analysis to support informed decision-making. This role works closely with the CFO on financial management, operational planning, and organizational strategy while ensuring the responsible stewardship of the organization's financial resources in support of its mission.

Essential Duties

This position performs, but is not limited to, the following essential functions:

• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee and ensure a timely completion of all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, fixed assets, cash management and resolving any discrepancies.
• Direct the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
• Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Establish, maintain, and monitor internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies.
• Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
• Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget and financial forecasts and ability to analyze financial trends and communicate meaningful recommendations to CFO.
• Monitor cash flow and provide financial analysis and recommendations to CFO.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements and applicable nonprofit regulations.
• Develop, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and financial processes.
• Support CFO by providing financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations for strategic initiatives.
• Partner with the Chief Financial Officer in the management of the organization's commercial insurance program by coordinating annual insurance renewals, providing financial and operational information to brokers and carriers, reviewing insurance-related financial data, and supporting risk management initiatives to ensure appropriate coverage and cost-effective protection of organizational assets.
• Collaborate with CFO to promote sound financial stewardship across the organization.
• Perform other duties as assigned

To perform this job successfully, the individual must have the following education, experience and attributes:  

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to develop and manage high performing teams.
• Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting, general ledger management, month-end close, and internal controls.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
• NetSuite experience
• Previous nonprofit accounting experience.

• Working conditions are for a regular office environment. Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Must communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Must observe details at close range. Must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time.  
• Work Schedule may include weekend and/or evening work as needed by the organization. 
• Travel may be required based on organizational needs. May be required to travel and attend seminars/training or meetings occasionally which may require an overnight stay.
