Location: Hybrid — 3 days in Washington, DC office

A well-established nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to lead the day-to-day operations of its Finance department. Reporting to the CFO, this role will oversee a small team and partner with executive leadership and department heads on financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and process improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily accounting and finance operations while ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations.
• Oversee and develop a small finance team.
• Manage financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and month-end close activities.
• Partner with the CFO and senior leadership on financial analysis and organizational planning.
• Evaluate and improve finance processes, systems, and internal controls.
• Identify opportunities to increase efficiency, eliminate backlogs, and improve service to internal stakeholders.
• Leverage financial technology and refine procedures to strengthen the department's effectiveness.
• Collaborate with department leaders and executive-level stakeholders on budgets and financial reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including management experience.
• Experience leading or supervising a finance/accounting team.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
• Experience with Sage Intacct strongly preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is a plus.
• CPA is not required, but is a plus.
