Job Description - Controls Technician

Work Description:

The Controls Technician supports the Motion Division with a primary focus on service and field support, ensuring installed equipment operates reliably and issues are resolved quickly.

This role also contributes to PLC/HMI programming updates and supports assembly, installation, and commissioning activities. The position requires strong troubleshooting capability, hands-on technical skills, and the ability to work across the full lifecycle of custom automation equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Service & Support 

· Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and controls-related issues on installed equipment (remote and on-site)

· Diagnose root cause of system issues and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime

· Support customer-driven changes, including process adjustments, recipe updates, and system improvements

· Provide technical support to customers in a clear and professional manner

· Document issues, resolutions, and field changes to support continuous improvement

2. Programming & Controls Support

· Modify and update PLC programs to resolve issues and support system improvements

· Support HMI updates including recipe changes, parameter adjustments, and interface improvements

· Assist in debugging controls systems during startup and field service activities

· Work with Engineering to implement controls changes and standard improvements

· Support validation of system functionality following programming updates

3. Assembly Support & Commissioning

· Support assembly and wiring of custom automation equipment in-house

· Assist with equipment installations at customer sites

· Support system startup, commissioning, and on-site debugging activities

· Assist with gear changes, product changeovers, and process setup

· Collaborate with Assembly, Engineering, and Project Management to ensure successful project execution


Requirements

  

Qualifications:

Required

· 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls, or maintenance

· Strong troubleshooting capability across electrical, mechanical, and controls systems

· Working knowledge of PLC systems (Allen-Bradley preferred)

· Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings

· Experience supporting installed equipment in a service or maintenance capacity

· Ability to work in both shop and field environments

Preferred

· Experience with PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text)

· HMI/SCADA experience (e.g., FactoryTalk, WinCC)

· Experience with custom engineered or automated equipment

· Familiarity with motion control, robotics, or multi-axis systems

· Prior field service or customer-facing experience

Physical Demands:

· Ability to stand and work on equipment for extended periods

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required

· Ability to work in industrial environments (shop and customer sites)
