About Us

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Join our team as a Cook! We are seeking a skilled cook to prepare quality meals and support a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.

  • Experience preparing and cooking food in large quantities.
  • General knowledge of the uses and adaptabilities of various pieces of cooking equipment used in commercial or institutional kitchens.
  • Ability to consistently uphold high standards of personal hygiene and ensure proper food sanitation practices.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical computations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Key Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Daily planning and preparation of meals based on number of customers including but not limited to starting the cooking process, observing food while cooking, following approved food handling techniques and sanitation equipment.
  • Following standardized recipes, reading menus, and obtain necessary ingredients for meal preparation to assure quality, quantity, and nutritional value of foods.
  • Check supplies to determine that sufficient quantities of food are available and pulling meats from freezers to thaw in time for food preparation.
  • Check production schedules and correctly determining variety and quantity of food.
  • Assisting in preparation of meals including starting the cooking process, observing food while cooking, following approved food handling techniques and sanitation requirements.
  • Assisting in serving food, cleaning of cafeteria line & cleaning of the kitchen area.
  • Follow OSHA safety guidelines and county health codes.
  • Cleaning cafeteria line, dining room, kitchen and equipment to maintain sanitary environment and preventing food borne illnesses.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Typical work schedule: Monday – Friday: 5:00 am - 1:30 pm (Possible holidays and weekend work as needed).

Note: Qualified recommended applicant(s) must undergo and successfully pass:

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and/or experience in food preparation that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience in a commercial and/or institutional setting.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
