About Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy:

The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is a quasi-military style resident program for at risk youth in the ages of 16-18. Sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard, the TCA mission is to redirect the efforts of young adults who have had trouble succeeding in the normal high school environment. The intent is to give them the skills and attitude to become productive citizens in their communities. The Academies are located in two different locations: Salemburg and New London, North Carolina. It is a 17-month program divided into two distinct phases: a five-month in-residence phase at the academies, and a twelve-month post-residential phase immediately following graduation for the in-residence phase. TCA seeks to improve the life and future employment potential of its cadets by concentrating on eight core components which are: Life Coping Skills, Academic Excellence, Responsible Citizenship, Job Skills, Service to Community, Health and Hygiene, Physical Fitness, and Leadership/Followership.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for providing nutritionally adequate meals that meet Federal Child Nutrition Program meal pattern requirements while following established operational procedures to ensure efficient and effective food production and service. Duties include assisting with food and supply requisitions, inspecting incoming fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats to verify they meet purchase order specifications, and checking the cost and quality of received items. The role requires ensuring proper storage of all items and adhering to Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy procedures for inventorying food, supplies, and equipment, as well as reporting inventories in compliance with federal and state regulations. The position supports the integrity and accountability of the facility’s Child Nutrition Program by maintaining required production records and complying with all applicable federal and state regulations and Department Child Nutrition policies. Maintaining a safe, sanitary environment that protects the health and well-being of the facility’s Cadets is essential, including upholding high standards of food safety, personal cleanliness, and proper equipment use and care. Additional responsibilities include interpreting and following standardized recipes according to planned menus, planning and preparing food for large groups, adhering to oral and written instructions, communicating positively with staff and Cadets, and performing other duties as assigned by the Food Service Supervisor I.

We operate everyday starting from 5:30am in the morning until 7:30pm at night, every weekend.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, and health insurance.

Salary Range - $31,200.00-$48,810.00

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.   

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.

Management Preferences  

  • Knowledge of the methods in preparing meals, vegetables, and foods in large quanities.

Military Experience
