Director of Beyond School Programming

The Director of Beyond School Programming is responsible for the strategic leadership, financial sustainability, and day-to-day excellence of Atlas Public Schools’ Beyond School Afterschool and intersession programs. This role oversees all aspects of afterschool programming, including operations, staffing, student experience, family accountability, and budget management. The Director ensures the program operates safely, at a high level of quality, and in alignment with Atlas’s values, while also remaining financially sound and not operating at a deficit. This position requires a strong leader who can hold staff and families accountable, manage complex logistics, and balance program quality with fiscal responsibility.

Program Leadership, Coordination, and Operations

  • Provide overall leadership and ownership of the Beyond School Afterschool and intersession programs.

  • Oversee daily program operations, ensuring smooth transitions from the school day into afterschool programming.

  • Coordinate and assign classroom and activity spaces; ensure all locations are clean, safe, and appropriately equipped.

  • Manage materials, supplies, and inventory to ensure activities are well-prepared and cost-conscious.

  • Maintain accurate student rosters, ensuring students are released from their daytime classrooms to the correct groups.

  • Monitor and verify student attendance daily to ensure all enrolled students are accounted for.

Program Quality and Enrichment

  • Design and oversee engaging, high-quality afterschool and intersession programming aligned to student interests, developmental needs, and Atlas’s academic and cultural expectations.

  • Coach and support staff in designing and delivering meaningful activities that promote creativity, exploration, and skill-building during intersession.

  • Own the planning, logistics, and partnerships required for intersession programming, including coordinating off-site expeditions and securing on-site visitors from community organizations.

  • Regularly observe program activities, providing feedback and corrective action as needed to ensure consistent quality and student engagement.

Staffing, Supervision, and Accountability

  • Hire, onboard, schedule, and supervise Beyond School staff.

  • Manage daily staffing plans and ensure adequate coverage for all program areas.

  • Hold staff accountable to expectations related to attendance, professionalism, student supervision, and program quality.

  • Serve as the primary point person for staff concerns, performance issues, substitute coverage, and daily problem-solving.

  • Escalate performance concerns to the Chief of Staff as appropriate.

Family Accountability, Communication, and Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding Beyond School programming, including expectations, behavior, attendance, and scheduling.

  • Communicate proactively with families about program updates, incidents, and changes through Dojo, email, phone calls and notes.

  • Enforce program policies related to pickup times, behavior expectations, and enrollment requirements.

  • Hold families accountable for timely pickup, completed documentation, and adherence to school policies.

  • Address concerns or conflicts professionally and promptly, escalating when necessary.

Financial Management and Sustainability

  • Own the financial health of the Beyond School program, ensuring it does not operate in the red.

  • Manage enrollment, payment collection, and payment tracking.

  • Ensure all payments, invoices, and balances are collected in accordance with Atlas policies.

  • Monitor program expenses, staffing costs, and supply spending to remain within budget.

  • Partner with school leadership to set pricing, enrollment caps, and financial targets for afterschool and intersession programming.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Atlas Public Schools and Unleashing Potential (UP), ensuring clear communication, alignment, and smooth student transitions when applicable.

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with external community organizations and enrichment providers (e.g., Gene Slay Boys & Girls Club and similar programs) to expand opportunities for students and proactively connect families to additional afterschool, enrichment, and youth development supports.

  • Collaborate closely with school-day staff to understand and support individual student needs, including behavior plans, medical concerns, and accommodations.

  • Maintain regular communication with school leadership, including sharing updates, challenges, and data related to enrollment, staffing, and finances.

Safety, Compliance, and Culture

  • Ensure all program spaces meet safety expectations and reflect Atlas’s values and culture.

  • Ensure compliance with all school policies, licensing requirements, and emergency procedures.

  • Address behavioral issues using Atlas’s student support systems and restorative practices.

  • Maintain accurate records, rosters, attendance logs, and sign-in/out documentation in alignment with compliance requirements.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Oversee late-pickup procedures for both overflow (students not enrolled in aftercare) and those in aftercare and ensure appropriate follow-up with families.

  • In the event a student is not picked up by the end of Beyond School hours, the Director may be required to remain on site beyond scheduled hours to ensure student safety.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the success and sustainability of Beyond School programming.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in education, school administration, youth development, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred, particularly in School Administration, Educational Leadership, or a related area.

  • Prior experience working in a school-based or youth-serving administrative role.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with school leaders, staff, students, families, and community partners.

Schedule + Flexibility Expectations

  • This position follows a set, year-round schedule aligned with the school calendar.

  • The role requires flexibility during intersession weeks, including adjusted hours or responsibilities to support student programming when school is not in regular session.

  • Occasional schedule adjustments may be required to meet program needs, family communication, or staffing coverage during peak times.
