Job Description - Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries (CYYAM)

Parish Name: St. Michael's Catholic Church

Location: 15546 Pomerado Rd, Poway, CA 92064

Reports to: Pastoral Associate

Employment Type: Part-Time, 25 hours per week

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay: $20 - $25 per hour

Empower high school students and young adults to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

While not intended to be a complete list, the following are examples of duties associated with this position.  Other related expectations, responsibilities, and tasks are required at times. The CYYAM should be adaptive and receptive to the varying requirements of this position.

  • Promotes full, active, conscious youth participation in individual prayer, and at praise, worship and liturgy opportunities. 
  • Plan, develop and implement a schedule of social opportunities for the youth (9-12 grades) of the parish to form community identity and establish peer relationships within the parish community.
  • Plan, develop and implement a program of Faith Formation for Confirmation, making certain that all events and programs reflect sound Catholic teaching.
  • Plan and coordinate regularly scheduled Youth Ministry liturgy.
  • Plan and coordinate Confirmation prayer vigil and Confirmation Mass.
  • Plan and coordinate 1st and 2nd year retreats for the Confirmation Program.
  • Plan and coordinate regularly scheduled activities for confirmed high school students. Recruit leaders and core team members to help maintain adequate supervision and provide for safety at all times and assist the CYYAM in various aspects.
  • Plan, develop and implement a program to facilitate the training and support of youth leaders recruited as teen leaders, role models, faith leaders, volunteers, and core members.
  • Keep youth and parents informed of programs, social, service and retreat opportunities through distribution of a calendar of scheduled activities, social media updates, Flocknote newsletters and bulletin postings.
  • Recruit youth to attend training for liturgical ministries allowing them to serve as lector and/or Eucharistic minister for the parish.
  • Provide monthly/weekly opportunities for fellowship and faith formation for adults 18-39.
  • Establish and facilitate a Young Adult Leadership Team, which is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive program.
  • Developing a systematic and intentional plan for young adult catechesis that utilizes a creative variety of formats, settings, and timeframes.
  • Fostering the involvement of young adults in the life of the parish, including serving on various parish committees and being involved in parish activities.
  • Plan and coordinate youth participation at Steubenville Conference, San Diego Youth Day, and Camp Emmaus.
  • Maintain necessary program records, including logs of activities and rosters. 
  • Facilitate Quinceaneras and OCIA for Teens.
  • Attend monthly Staff Meetings and Catechetical Team Meetings.
  • Participate in Pastoral Council meetings.
  • Perform and maintain various administrative duties in support of the above.

Requirements

  • Active practicing Roman Catholic, in full communion with the Church.
  • Ability to articulate a clear understanding of the Catholic faith and to serve as a committed witness to the faith. 
  • Ability to keep abreast of youth and young adult faith formation research and needs within the Church. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others in a team environment, under supervision or independently through a variety of communication methods. 
  • Ability to take initiative, create, and innovate with a willingness to learn and grow within a dynamic environment. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion when managing sensitive Parish matters.  
  • Exercise prudence and reflective judgment. 
  • Show exceptional attention to detail while prioritizing to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment. 
  • Well versed in using a computer and social media, including, but not limited to Microsoft Suite.
  • Valid CA driver's license with the ability to travel to the Parish and other associated locations within the Diocese for work-related duties. 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
