The Coordinator of Youth Minister proclaims the Gospel primarily by coordinating, facilitating, developing and implementing an annual ministry program based on the needs of the parish youth. The ministry embodies the areas adapted from the USCCB Renewing the Vision for Youth Ministry, namely: evangelization and catechesis, justice and service, community, guidance and healing, prayer and worship, and family.
Through the promotion of evangelization and life-long faith engagement/formation, the Coordinator of Youth Ministry assists in advocating a vision of comprehensive youth ministry for all youth in grades 6-12.
POSITION Responsibilities
1. Serves as a member of the parish staff. Participate in decision-making regarding total parish direction and activities. Attend staff meetings, faith formation team meetings, prayer days and educational days.
2. As a member of the Faith Formation Team, participating in the planning and implementation of team activities such as registration, catechist recruitment and parent and catechist formation.
3. Prepare an annual budget in cooperation with administrative staff
4. Develop a calendar for the year in coordination with the overall parish calendar.
5. Keep youth and parents informed of Diocesan programs, social, service and retreat opportunities
6. Organize and supervise suitable fundraising activities
7. Communicate regularly to parish youth to keep them informed of upcoming events
8. Meet regularly with the Director of Faith Formation to ensure proper and adequate communication and coordination of the 9-12 programs in which the DYM is involved..
9. Participate in Diocesan Youth Ministry planning and implementation of Diocesan youth ministry activities and maintains a relationship with Diocesan staff of Evangelization and Catechists and office of Youth Ministry.
10. Establish regular, publicized office hours for the benefit of youth, parishioners and staff.
11. Support and endorse diocesan and parish policies.
12. Coordinate the recruitment, training and support of core leadership teams including a youth council nurturing the development of leadership positions for youth and volunteer adults.
13. Coordinate public relations for Youth Ministry through collaboration with the
Director of Communications and/or leadership team and core team members.
14. Provide support and supervision for stipend personnel in Middle School Youth Ministry.
15. To become personally acquainted with the youth of OLIH parish and to be available to listen and guide.
Program Content and Development
1. Discerns proper balance among components of youth ministry, i.e. catechists, prayer and worship, social issues and service, guidance and healing and community building
2. Discerns emerging youth ministry needs; develops modifications and enhancements to meet needs as they emerge.
3. Fostering the involvement of young people in the life of the parish, including the leadership of the youth council to grow participation in parish activities
4. Coordinating the outreach to and evangelization of all young people in the parish and beyond
5. In collaboration with parish staff, to provide appropriate programs for parents of parish youth
6. Guide, prepare, coordinate and be present at para-liturgical celebrations for
youth of the parish.
7. Be involved in Diocesan youth ministry opportunities as availability allows, particularly with opportunities that grow the prayer life and spiritual development of youth.
8. Help plan, coordinate and assist the Director of Faith Formation with visioning and implementing opportunities for the sacramental and communal life of the youth and their families.
Staff Responsibility & Collaboration
1. Work with the parish staff to coordinate and implement ministry activities involving the youth and families of the parish with a special focus on evangelization.
2. Meet regularly with parish staff for planning, corroboration and decision-making concerning faith life of the parish.
3. Attend Parish Council and Youth Formation Advisory Circle to provide a Youth Ministry report
4. Attend Parish Committees for periodic and appropriate communication and collaboration
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
A. Skills, Knowledge and/or abilities
1. Demonstrate administrative and supervisory duties in a
timely fashion, utilizing good communication and relationship skills.
2. Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current
with trends in Youth Ministry trends, including attendance at all Diocesan assigned gatherings as appropriate.
B. Education, Training and/or Experience
1. BA in Theology/Religious Education or a related educational field and/or a certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic institution of higher learning.
2. Ongoing participation in the Safe Environment Program (Virtus) sponsored through the diocese.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR QUANTIFIABLE MEASURES
A. The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is responsible for submitting and overseeing a yearly budget for the Youth Ministry program to the parish business office.
B. The Coordinator of Youth Ministry supervises and handles funds for man fund raisers associated with youth ministry activities and must adhere to Diocesan and Parish Financial policies.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This position entails frequent evening and weekend work with occasional travel for offsite work.
