Job Summary:

Empire Marketing Strategies is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Product Development Lab Technician to support Kroger laboratory functions aligned with Kroger Manufactured Products (KMP) and Kroger Labeled Products (KLP). Reporting to the Kroger Product Development Scientist, this role will execute a wide range of lab-based tasks including product preparation, sensory testing, audits, and data tracking. The ideal candidate will be proactive, collaborative, and able to work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating Kroger’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety.

• Product Development Support

• Sensory Testing & Quality Review

• Lab Operations & Compliance 

Core Functions:

Product Development Support

o Assist Kroger in executing elements of the new product development process for both KMP and KLP items.

o Coordinate and communicate with suppliers to facilitate benchwork, audits, product cuttings, and sensory panels.

o Track Kroger project progress using KPIs and internal reporting tools; provide updates to the Scientist and cross-functional teams.

o Confirm accuracy of nutrition labeling and preparation/cooking instructions for retail products.

o Support the development of new formulations, recipe preparations, and quality validations.

Sensory Testing & Quality Review

o Independently organize, set up, and conduct product sensory evaluations, audits, and internal cuttings.

o Collaborate with the Sensory Manager to assist with consumer validation testing events.

o Monitor and manage production samples for quality and retention.

o Issue audit and cutting reports and flag any product quality concerns during development or testing.

Lab Operations & Compliance

o Perform daily lab upkeep including cleaning of equipment, dishes, and utensils; manage inventory of lab supplies.

o Calibrate and operate lab equipment accurately and safely.

o Coordinate with multiple Scientists to efficiently handle overlapping work demands.

o Execute tasks in compliance with established safety and food quality programs, policies, and practices.

o Maintain flexibility and focus when working in varied conditions (e.g., cold storage, ovens, allergens, standing long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs).

Requirements

  

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or technical degree in culinary science or a related field preferred

• 2+ years of experience in a food laboratory, culinary/kitchen setting, or a science-related field

• Coursework in science, chemistry, biology, math, or statistics is preferred

Required Skills/Abilities: 

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret information and communicate outcomes clearly

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to quickly learn Kroger-specific technology platforms

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Attention to detail with high precision in execution

• Ability to follow detailed instructions and manage multiple tasks concurrently

• Culinary skills and experience coordinating multiple cooking activities

• Adaptability to changing priorities and last-minute adjustments

• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively

Physical Requirements: 

• prolonged periods of standing and frequent lifting of items up to 50 lbs

• Exposure to varying temperatures, including freezers and heated cooking environments

• Comfortable working with food allergens and food preparation tools

Tools and Equipment: 

• Standard laboratory equipment (scales, ovens, mixers, sensory testing tools)

• Office software and lab data tracking/reporting systems

Work Environment: 

• Fast-paced laboratory environment with regular cross-functional collaboration

• Hands-on role requiring physical activity and adherence to food safety protocols
