We are looking for a passionate and experienced Benefits Manager to lead the development, oversight, and communication of our comprehensive employee benefit programs. In this hands-on role, you'll be responsible for ensuring our programs are legally compliant, cost-effective, and meet the needs of our valued employees (both union and non-union) across the United States
Functions/Responsibilities:
Lead the development, oversight, administration, communication, and measurement of benefit plans including non-qualified plans, policies, and programs (health and welfare, defined benefit and defined contribution) in the United States for union and non-union employees. Ensure programs are legally compliant, cost-effective, aligned with market and organizational needs, and operationally efficient. This is a hands-on management position, requiring skill in operations and vendor management.
Research and recommend new and/or improved employee benefit plans and cost-saving measures. Responsibilities include compliance with all legal requirements of various benefit programs and required annual reports.
Manage a multi-skill level Corporate Benefits staff responsible for administering, advising, and providing consultative support to Human Resources representatives and clients on U.S. benefit plans (e.g., eligibility, leave, coverage, claims procedures, etc.). Sustain and continue to develop a committed, high quality, and interactive team.
Ensure smooth operation of benefits programs in all phases (implementation, open enrollment, HRIS/payroll interfaces, investment fund option changes, employee appeals, etc.).
Oversee escalation process for complex benefit inquiries and interpretation. Identify gaps and other concerns in plan documents, administration, and procedures.
Measure the effectiveness of each benefit program in terms of performance versus projections, costs, and utilization, and highlight concerns or issues and take corrective action as appropriate.
Determine employee benefits programs by benchmarking best practices, researching industry and employment trends, tracking legislation, and estimating impact. Help with design, development, and pricing strategies of plans with Director, Global Benefits.
Provide overall guidance and support with regards to benefits for union negotiations. Assist with company bargaining proposals and analyze union benefit proposals.
Develop and deploy communications to increase employee awareness, participation, and understanding of benefits. Train Human Resources staff regarding key benefits facts, resources, and compliance.
Establish and build strong working relationships with Sun’s HR community, Corporate Accounting and Finance, Tax, Payroll, Legal, Risk Management, and other key functions within the Company to support business needs. Manage relationships with external vendors, brokers, and consultants.
Ensure each benefit plan is compliant with all legislation, and ensure our records, processing and procedures meet or exceed compliance standards (e.g., PPACA, ERISA, HIPAA, IRS, DOL, J-SOX, etc.).
Role may expand to include Canada, as appropriate, to cover North America plans and programs.
Requirements/Qualifications:
Minimum 10 years in employee benefits with direct responsibility for health and welfare, defined benefit, and defined contribution plans in an automated and outsourced environment.
Minimum 5 years leading team in a managerial role.
Strong background in execution, development, delivery, vendor management, and compliance of domestic benefit programs for mid-size or large companies. Multinational company experience with unions and expatriates/inpatriates preferred. Proven ability as a subject matter expert.
Comprehension of insurance underwriting and actuarial concepts. Knowledge of emerging benefit trends, competitive practices and major laws and regulations in the U.S.
Must be able to conceptualize problems and solutions and think across disciplines and functions.
Demonstrated project management and process improvement skills from the initial research/planning stage to implementation for on-time delivery.
Excellent analytical, project management, written and oral presentation skills. Strong sense of urgency, attention to detail, and accuracy. Well organized, able to delegate, and prioritize accordingly.
Solid Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and system skills; experience with SAP SuccessFactors, WorkForce Software, and ADP Payroll strongly preferred.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Finance, or a related discipline.
Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) designation a plus.
