Job Description - Corporate Controller

Position Summary:

Responsible for establishing standards, policies and practices pertaining to financial management, financial statement preparation, audit, general ledger, accounts payable, cash receipts and financial planning and analysis. The Controller shall provide services consistent with the Mission and Philosophy of Delta Dental of Missouri and its subsidiaries (includes direct and indirect subsidiaries), and in accordance to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), statutory accounting principles (SAP) and statutory regulations. Additionally, the Controller shall foster effective communication, collaboration and networking throughout the Delta Dental of Missouri system.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by the Controller. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job functions performed in this position.

1. Financial Management

• Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for appropriate accounting procedures and internal controls.

• Prepares, reviews, and analyzes financial statements for various audiences (i.e., Board, Management Team, auditors, etc.) on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, as needed.

• Directs the preparation of supporting schedules and documentation for all financial statement accounts, including monthly reconciliations (including, but not limited to premiums, claims, investments, payroll and operating expenses).

• Provides oversight to the Banking/Treasury functions on a daily basis to ensure that proper cash flow is maintained. Reviews banking arrangements of the corporation and related entities for effective and efficient transactions. Review all bank and cash account reconciliations.

• Directs and coordinates the annual audits of Delta Dental of Missouri and related entities.

• Provides ongoing assessment of financial reporting systems and evaluates new products for system implementation.

• Provide ongoing recommendations for operational improvements and adjustments to the internal cost structures of Delta Dental of Missouri and related entities.

• Directs and coordinates the organized filing of accounting information.

• Directs and coordinates an efficient accounting system and establishes standards for the creation, maintenance and retention of accounting records.

• Responsible for evaluating significant accounting estimates which impact financial reporting.

2. Reporting

• Compiles financial statements by entity and prepares consolidated statements with appropriate supporting schedules and inter-company eliminations for various audiences, including, but not limited to:

o Board of Directors and Board of Trustees

o Management team(s)

o Staff

o Member/Providers

o Auditors

• Directs the distribution of internal financial statements within prescribed work-day requirements as directed by the Chief Financial Officer.

• Prepares monthly narratives of the financial operations of Delta Dental of Missouri and its subsidiaries.

• Directs the research and analysis of various technical accounting related issues and produces logical, well-supported conclusions and recommendations, typically in writing. Implements new accounting pronouncements – GAAP, SAP and statutory regulations.

• Preparation of financial information to be presented at monthly management meetings.

• Directs and coordinates responses to outside inquiries for financial information.

• Coordinates with Marketing for distribution of financial information in response to RFPs.

• Directs and coordinates responses to financial inquiries from the Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA).

3. Regulatory/Compliance

• Coordinates the required quarterly and annual statutory financial filings for the Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) and National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) for Delta Dental of Missouri and its various regulated subsidiaries. Also provides financial information to the Compliance Department for use in other regulatory filings.

• Coordinates the required tax filings for Delta Dental of Missouri and its subsidiaries (to include consumer use/sales tax, premium taxes, 1099 reporting, Form 990, Form 1120, etc.).

4. Decision Support, Budgeting and Forecasting

• Works with Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and Actuarial departments to facilitate budgeting, forecasting and financial modeling.

• Participate in cost-containment committees established within the organization and make fact-based recommendations for improvements.

• May assist in analyzing financial efficacy of current product offerings and make recommendations to enhance profitability or consumer satisfaction.

• Provide data and analysis as inputs into the strategic planning process.

• Provide analysis on status of current strategic initiatives.

5. Leadership

• Assists managers with appropriate paperwork required for completion of accounting transactions.

• Evaluates and implements methods for education and training of the management team in sound business practices and financial discipline.

• Coordinates the development and communication of accounting policies.

• Prepare, maintain and coordinate the budget for the department.

• Reviews work papers and schedules generated by internal staff, and provides ongoing mentoring/coaching to internal staff, as needed.

• Conducts performance appraisals and oversees performance management and development for the Accounting, Reporting and FP&A direct and indirect reports.

• Establishes Corporate and Departmental goals. Evaluates progress of the goals and recommends corrective actions as needed.

• Participates in the strategic planning process and takes lead on strategies which impact the economics of Delta Dental and related entities.

• Monitors employee morale and coordinates celebrations as appropriate to enhance employee morale.

6. Personal and Professional Growth

• Attends management meetings and actively participates.

• Stays knowledgeable and current in areas of responsibility. Makes or proposes changes to enhance corporate and department services.

• Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, outside conferences and professional affiliations.

• Develops staff to embrace additional responsibilities and promote career growth.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Accounting or related field required; MBA preferred; CPA required.

• Must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in accounting/financial management or public accounting.

• Minimum of 5 years' experience in management with demonstrated leadership skills required.

• Experience in reporting requirements within the insurance industry and / or nonprofit industry preferred.

• Understanding and commitment to the mission, vision and values of Delta Dental of Missouri and subsidiaries.

• Requires a minimum of 40 hours per week; hours may be long and irregular at times.

• Ability to present ideas effectively in writing, orally, and in group presentations.

• Problem-solving skills.

• Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Proficient in general ledger accounting, Sage Intacct experience is preferred.

• Proficiency in the preparation of quarterly and annual NAIC statutory blanks preferred.

• Experience in taxation for both exempt and non-exempt organizations preferred.

• Must be able to maintain confidentiality and work under highly stressful situations.

Environment:

• This position currently functions as a hybrid role working from both home and in-office environments. Any home office setting must be conducive to all guidelines outlined by the organization. This role is required to regularly attend in-person meetings, the frequency of which is determined by management based on departmental or organizational needs.

• General office working conditions which may require sitting for extended periods of time.

• Infrequent overnight travel may be required for industry meetings and/or conferences.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands and arms to handle, feel, reach, and operate a computer.
