About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

This position reports to the Correctional Food Service Manager I and is located in the Food Service department of a minimum custody, male correctional facility. The job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Providing supervision for Correctional Food Service Officers.

2. Providing oversight of offenders performing large-scale food production functions.

3. Providing supervision of the preparation and service of regular and therapeutic diets for the offender population.

4. Planning, directing and supervising the daily preparation and serving of food to offenders.

5. Providing accurate and timely record keeping.

6. Utilizing computerized food and nutrition systems to prepare and serve daily meals.

7. Conducting employee evaluations.

8. Completing duties to include food preparation, serving, storage, menu planning, menu substitutions, and maintaining sanitation requirements.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of large scale food production and food service activities.

  • Documented supervision of employees and/or offender workers.

This Is An Internal Posting Open Only For Current North Carolina Department Of Adult Corrections Employees, And Eligible State Government Reduction in Force (RIF) Candidates From North Carolina State Government, or Current Temporary Employees.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

About Wake Correctional Center

Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum-security prison for adult males. It is primarily a “work” unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional-facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program, leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service, clothes house, janitorial, landscaping, maintenance, canteen, and recreation areas.

Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide full-time vocational classes in Certified Communications, Heating/Air Conditioning and Electrical Wiring. Part-time classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED preparation, college-level courses and college correspondence classes are available.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, in management of a commercial food service operations, OR as a Correctional Officer, or one year as a Correctional Food Service Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
