Job Description - Counselor I

Description

 

Position Summary

We are seeking a caring, faith-filled Social Emotional Counselor to join our school community. This position supports the holistic development of students by providing social-emotional guidance rooted in Catholic values. The ideal candidate will work closely with students, teachers, and families to help each child thrive spiritually, emotionally, and academically.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling for emotional, social, and behavioral growth.
  • Teach students skills in empathy, self-regulation, and responsible decision-making.
  • Support students through challenges such as anxiety, grief, friendship difficulties, or transitions.
  • Implement school-wide SEL programming aligned with Catholic principles.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Partner with teachers and parents to support student well-being and development.
  • Participate in team meetings to develop intervention strategies for struggling students.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate external resources when necessary.

Faith & Character Formation

  • Reinforce Catholic identity and values through guidance practices.
  • Collaborate on initiatives that promote respect, kindness, compassion, and service.
  • Support the school's mission to create a safe, loving, and inclusive community.

Administrative

  • Maintain confidential student records and progress reports.
  • Assist with crisis response and school safety planning.
  • Attend professional development and remain current on best practices in SEL and Catholic education.
  • Serve on a restorative discipline team to assist with disciplinary action decisions
  • Contribute to the leadership team in making decisions that best support students and staff members

Requirements

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Valid state certification/licensure in counseling or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children in a school or clinical setting preferred.
  • Practicing Catholic with a commitment to Catholic education and mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with SEL curricula (e.g., Second Step, Zones of Regulation).
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and restorative approaches.
  • Prior experience in Catholic or private school settings.
