Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Court Administrator, the Court Interpreter/Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring access to justice by providing professional language interpretation and coordination services for court proceedings. This position facilitates clear communication between non-English-speaking individuals and the court and manages the scheduling and logistics of interpreter services. 

The Court Interpreter/Coordinator must be fluent in English and Spanish; proficiency in additional languages is highly desirable. This role also supports general court operations as assigned by the Court Administrator. 

Starting Pay: $21.52 - $25.55 per hour; additional pay depending on experience

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm hours may vary slightly depending on court proceedings 

Benefits: Full benefits; health, dental, and life insurance, paid time off and paid holidays, vision reimbursement plan

Retirement: Utah Retirement Systems, Pension and/or 401(k)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Interpretation Services: 

  • Provide accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation for court proceedings, including hearings, trials, arraignments, and other legal matters. 
  • Interpret for defendants, witnesses, attorneys, court personnel, and other involved parties. 
  • Ensure accurate and effective communication between court participants while upholding legal and ethical interpretation standards. 

Coordination & Scheduling: 

  • Schedule and coordinate interpreters for court hearings and other proceedings as needed. 
  • Maintain a roster of certified and qualified interpreters for various languages. 
  • Ensure interpreters are available and scheduled according to court dockets and case needs. 
  • Process interpreter invoices and maintain financial records related to interpreter services. 

Compliance & Training: 

  • Ensure compliance with Utah State Court Interpreter Program guidelines and federal regulations regarding interpreter services. 
  • Stay informed of best practices and legal requirements for court interpretation. 
  • Provide training and guidance to court staff on working effectively with interpreters. 
  • Maintain records and documentation related to interpreter services and language access initiatives. 

Administrative & Other Duties: 

  • Assist in developing and implementing court policies related to interpreter services. 
  • Assess the language needs of the West Valley Justice Court and recommend solutions for better language access. 
  • Generate reports on interpreter usage, service effectiveness, and costs. 
  • Assist with general court administrative tasks as assigned by the Court Administrator.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Minimum of two (2) years of professional interpreting experience in a legal or judicial setting is required. 
  • Experience in scheduling or coordinating interpreters is a plus. 
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills. 
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines. 

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Linguistics, or a related field (preferred). 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Certification as a Utah State Court Interpreter required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Nationally Certified Court Interpreter preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver’s license or the ability to obtain one. 

Language Skills

  • Fluency in English and Spanish (required); proficiency in an additional language is preferred.

Work Environment

  • Indoor environment.
  • Light physical effort in an office setting. Intermittent stress as a result of human behavior.
  • The noise level in the office is usually moderate.
  • Ability to work extended and unusual hours as required.
