Job Description - Court Reporter - Division 6

Department: Division 06

County or State Funded: State

Exempt or Non-exempt: Exempt

Pay Grade: S-95

Salary: $72,515.50 annually

Basic Function and Responsibility:

Highly responsible work in verbatim reporting of judicial proceedings at high rates of speed and preparing verbatim transcripts as required. Must prepare a complete and accurate report of proceedings and maintain electronic backup storage of such proceedings. Must keep all exhibits in possession until otherwise requested by the court, includes other administrative duties as assigned by the judge or designee. All work performed in accordance with procedures established by the district judges and clerk of court and is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and content.

Appointing Authority and Supervision Received

The judge assigned to the division is the appointing authority.  Court reporters serve at the pleasure of the judge.

Characteristic and Assigned Duties: (The following duties are representative of the position and do not include all duties which may be performed.)

  • Record and preserve all courtroom proceedings through acceptable verbatim recording method, such as machine shorthand or steno mask. 
  • Transcribe records of proceedings and provide accurate transcripts to person, or persons requesting the same within a reasonable amount of time, contingent upon payments of fees.
  • Perform a variety of legal office support work including preparing letters, correspondence, forms, and other documents.
  • Edit/proofread/correct written materials, and maintain copies of documents, and maintain, monitor and update files.
  • Generate reports and operate office equipment, and perform courtroom duties, such as marking exhibits.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (This job description does not include specific physical requirements necessary to perform the job, such as, carrying, standing and lifting. Such requirements vary from position to position and may be determined by the appointing authority.)

  • Knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications related to court reporting work.
  • Knowledge of filing and electronic record keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of legal processes and terminology.
  • Knowledge of English grammar/punctuation/spelling, and skill in reading/preparing legal documents.
  • Advanced skill in communicating effectively using the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in application of state and federal guidelines, rules, and statutes to perform essential functions of position.
  • Advanced skill in discretion and maintaining confidential information. 
  • Advanced skill in handling stress successfully and the ability to work well with other employees, court professionals and the public.
  • Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures, documents and terminology affecting assigned functions.
  • Advanced ability to work independently, follow instructions, and multi‐task.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a Certified Court Reporter (CCR) as provided by Rule 14 of the Missouri State Supreme Court Rules.

Necessary Special Requirement

All candidates selected for employment will be subject to background screenings as part of the hiring process.  Certain positions may also require additional checks, including but not limited to education verification, child abuse and neglect clearances, drug screenings, and physical assessments, as applicable to the responsibilities of the role.
