Job Summary:

The Commercial Loan Underwriter is responsible for underwriting new and renewal commercial loan requests, focusing on risk mitigation and profitability. This role handles complex credit structures with minimal supervision and serves as a technical expert in specialized underwriting areas such as Commercial & Industrial and Commercial Real Estate.

Essential Duties:

  1. Prepare Credit Approval Memoranda: Draft detailed summaries of loan requests, modifications, and renewals for approval. 
  2. Analyze Credit Risk: Evaluate deal structures, repayment ability, and collateral to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  3. Gather Customer Information: Collect relevant data from public sources and reports to support credit analysis. 
  4. Collaborate with Relationship Management Team: Work closely with relationship managers to achieve loan production targets. 
  5. Identify Problem Loans: Recognize high-risk loans and suggest appropriate risk ratings. 
  6. Maintain Documentation: Track and manage documentation to ensure adherence to policies and procedures. 
  7. Assist in Training: Support the onboarding and development of new Credit Analysts and interns.

Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or Economics preferred.

Experience: 5+ years of commercial loan underwriting or related experience.

Skills:

  • Manage Multiple Priorities: Handle various tasks efficiently with clear direction.
  • Attention to Detail & Problem-Solving: Maintain accuracy, identify issues, and take proactive action.
  • Compliance with Policies: Adhere to bank regulations and procedures.
  • Vendor Relationship Management: Effectively oversee and manage vendor partnerships.
  • Microsoft & Computer Skills: Proficient in Word, Excel, and general technology use.
  • Communication & Leadership: Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and organizational abilities.
  • Loan Knowledge: Understand loan principles, financial analysis, and lending regulations.
  • Writing Skills: Ability to clearly articulate the credit risk and support rationale for new credit requests, as well as existing credit exposure in the bank portfolio with underwriting memos.

Other Requirements: Ability to travel to all bank locations as needed and operate office equipment efficiently.

Working Conditions: Professional office environment with occasional physical demands such as lifting up to 50 pounds.
