Job Description - Crisis Counselor


Job Title: Crisis Counselor - Qualified Mental Health Professional 

Position Summary:

The QMHP will enhance psychosocial functioning by reducing functional impairments, modeling appropriate behavior, providing skills training in communication, anger management, peer relations, daily living, problem-solving, and impulse control, facilitating service collaboration and coordination, offering psychoeducation, and providing medication education.

Reports to: Clinical Supervisor

Supervision Over: None

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience: 

  • An individual with a conferred bachelor’s degree
  • 80 hours of didactic education training from a program approved or recognized by the Board
  • A minimum of one year of experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses or special needs (preferred). 

Knowledge of: 

  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions and for career counseling and guidance.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. 
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures, history, and origins.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skills and Abilities to: 

  • Accurately identifies client needs and understands individualized service plans 
  • Understand behavioral situations and react accordingly in an ethical manner
  • Understand the purpose of risk assessments and safety plans 
  • Provides a range of interventions and skill-building activities to address client needs
  • Understands how to connect clients with appropriate resources and services
  • Recognize signs of a crisis and respond effectively to de-escalate situations
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of client interactions and services provided
  • Practices within the scope of their registration and seeks consultation/supervision when necessary
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to identify a suicide risk
  • Demonstrates empathy, active listening, and respect for clients' autonomy
  • Communicates clearly, concisely, and respectfully with clients and colleagues.
  • Adapts communication style to meet the needs of diverse clients.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Maintains professional boundaries with clients and colleagues
  • Identifies and addresses ethical dilemmas thoughtfully and responsibly
  • Seeks out opportunities for ongoing learning and growth
  • Demonstrates insight into their strengths and limitations and makes sound judgments

Requirements

  • Provide direct and indirect care to program participants
  • Meet for weekly supervision with Clinical Supervisor 
  • Assist clients in developing acceptable habits and attitudes, managing their behavior, and meeting their service plan's goals and objectives.
  • Provide progress notes for each meeting with clients to document progress or barriers toward reaching goals and objectives of the client’s service plan. 
  • Assist in training client and family techniques that facilitate effective communication, mutual respect, and building lasting relationships. 
  • Use a computer and EHR software to prepare documents and maintain client records
  • Maintain knowledge, characteristics, and concepts of DSM-IV-TR diagnoses and related emotional manifestations. 
  • Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and Behavioral Management Techniques certification 
  • Any other assigned duties or responsibilities
