Job Description - Crossing Guard

The Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safe passage of children and pedestrians at designated school crossings. This role involves monitoring traffic, guiding students across intersections, and maintaining a visible and authoritative presence to promote safety before and after school hours.

The typical schedule is split shifts Monday-Friday from 7 AM-8:30 AM and 1:30 PM-3 PM. Hours may vary based on school hours and needs.

Supervision Received: The Crossing Guard works under the general guidance and direction of the Administrative Sergeant.

Supervision Exercised: N/A

  • Assist children and pedestrians in safely crossing streets at assigned intersections.
  • Monitor traffic flow to ensure safe gaps for crossing.
  • Use appropriate hand signals, signs, and safety gear (e.g., reflective vest, stop paddle, safety cones) to direct traffic and pedestrians.
  • Remain alert and attentive to surroundings and potential safety hazards.
  • Communicate safety rules and encourage safe behaviors among students.
  • Report unsafe driver behavior, accidents, or incidents to appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain a punctual and consistent presence at assigned location(s) during scheduled hours.
  • Participate in training and safety meetings as required.
  • High School Graduate or equivalent, and
  • Previous experience in safety, security, or school-related role, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and work in various weather conditions.
  • Good vision, hearing, and ability to judge traffic speed and distance accurately.
  • Reliable, responsible, and committed to the safety of children.
  • Effective communication and people skills.
  • Background check and training certification may be required (varies by location).
  • Familiarity with local traffic laws and school zone regulations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is required to use hands to handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above.

The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and be able to stand for 3 hours per day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
