Job Description - CROSSROADS SCHOOL - SUMMER PROGRAM COUNSELOR, part or full time

General Description

The summer program counselor is responsible for the supervision, safety, and attending to the needs of the children in the summer program at Crossroads. They will assist and run various activities for children. They will manage the classroom and/or program’s environment and children’s behaviors and create a positive environment.    

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Lead groups of children through various aspects of the program. 
  • Read plans for activities ahead of time, review materials provided, organize and prep to run the activities within your scope, communicate with supervisor proactively if anything is missing or needed to complete activities.   
  • Provide an enthusiastic environment. 
  • Be proactive in supervision.  
  • Ensure that children are supervised at all times in the classroom and on the playground. 
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for children to feel safe and comfortable. 
  • Implement positive and appropriate discipline when required.   
  • Interact positively with all children and share the love of Christ. This includes students who work below grade level and students whose personalities may be challenging.  Summer program counselors must put aside their own feelings to treat all children with respect, provide them all with equal learning opportunities, and make them feel comfortable in the program’s environment. 
  • Build children’s self-esteem through specific, positive feedback. 
  • Possess effective verbal and listening communication skills with other staff members and supervisor. 
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children can understand. 
  • Establish routines and provide positive guidance. 
  • Clearly have knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures. 
  • Interact and engage with children on their level. 
  • Provide needed first-aid or medical care.  Report any accidents/incidents immediately and complete appropriate paperwork as required. 

Requirements

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Able to work outside in inclement weather to supervise children at all times. 
  • Able to stoop, kneel, bend at waist, crawl, and reach on a daily basis. 
  • Able to write on the whiteboard and prepare bulletin boards. 
  • Able to lift and move up to 50 pounds occasionally. 
  • Able to climb stairs. 
  • Able to quickly summon help when an emergency arises either in the classroom, or on the playground. 
  • Able to render minimal first aid and CPR to children who may be injured while in the classroom or on the playground. 
  • Able to escort and supervise children and move them from one area to another as a cohesive unit. 
  • Able to move freely inside the classroom to monitor children. 

 

Mental Work Demands: 

  • Regular and on-time attendance. 
  • Ability to deal with challenging behavior from children and parents/guardians. 
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a positive attitude in adapting to changes in schedules, including those arising from weather conditions, special activities, and programming adjustments.? 
  • Have a positive “can-do” attitude.
