Job Description - Culture Coordinator


Position Overview


The Culture Coordinator supports the protection, revitalization, and growth of Unangax̂ culture, traditions, and lifeways for the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska. This position plays a central role in planning and implementing culturally grounded workshops, land-based activities, and community cultural programming. Working under the direction of the Culture Director, the Culture Coordinator ensures that programs reflect Tribal values, cultural protocols, and community priorities. The role emphasizes intergenerational knowledge sharing, engagement of Elders and Culture Bearers, and strengthening cultural identity across the community.



Key Responsibilities



  • Develop, plan, and implement cultural workshops and educational programs grounded in Unangax̂ traditions, arts, subsistence knowledge, storytelling, and seasonal practices.

  • Coordinate community cultural gatherings, demonstrations, and intergenerational learning

  • Work with the Culture Director to establish program goals, timelines, and culturally appropriate

  • Ensure cultural protocols and respectful practices are observed in all departmental

  • Support the preservation and respectful transmission of traditional knowledge shared by Elders and Culture Bearers.

  • Assist in identifying community cultural priorities and emerging

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with Elders, Culture Bearers, knowledge keepers, artists, and community members.

  • Support Elders and cultural instructors in the delivery of programs, ensuring proper respect, compensation, and protocol.

  • Encourage community participation and cultural pride through inclusive, welcoming

  • Support seasonal cultural activities and events aligned with Tribal

  • Assist with scheduling, logistics, and coordination of workshops, gatherings, and cultural

  • Manage program supplies, materials, and equipment, ensuring proper care and inventory

  • Maintain program documentation, participation records, and reports as required by grants or Tribal administration.




  • Collaborate with other Tribal departments as appropriate when cultural programming intersects with broader Tribal initiatives.



Qualifications Education:



  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, education, or a related field


Experience:



  • Experience coordinating community, cultural, educational, or land-based

  • Demonstrated understanding of Unangax̂ culture, values, and community priorities, or strong experience working respectfully within Alaska Native or Tribal communities.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Elders, community members, Tribal staff, and

  • Experience working with Tribal governments or Alaska Native organizations

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data tracking or reporting tools.
