Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Museum, the Curator of Exhibitions will be deeply committed to foregrounding art of the African diaspora through exhibitions. This position involves a commitment to research, interpretation of art objects, and an interest in collaboratively planning and executing programs related to exhibitions, permanent collection, and programs that engage both the immediate audience of students at the Atlanta University Center (AUC) and the broader public.
Note: This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement; but does require significant time on site because this role is key to the events that take place in the museum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develops exhibitions primarily from the permanent collection of Spelman College
Provides collaborative support and leadership for exhibitions organized by other institutions
Makes contributions to the field of art through publications
Works collaboratively with museum staff to develop events, programs, and innovative ways for the Museum’s diverse stakeholders, which includes students, faculty, staff, alumnae, the Atlanta University Center communities, community groups, and general audiences to engage in featured exhibitions and permanent collections
Leads tours of exhibitions and train museum ambassadors to lead tours
Research artists, objects, and themes in preparation for exhibitions.
Creates didactic materials such as wall text, labels, social media posts
Presents information about objects and exhibitions through tours and presentations
Mentors students and interns who will assist with organizing shows, promoting exhibitions and events, and do research on artists and objects
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree required, in art history or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in art of the African diaspora. At least 5-7 years of experience at a museum, university or other cultural institution. Must have proven success working collaboratively. Excellent communication skills in both writing and public speaking.
Must be comfortable working within a fast-paced department and have an entrepreneurial spirit that will help grow the Museum’s reach. This position requires significant attention to detail, and good organizational skills.
Must display excellent customer service skills when interacting with the Spelman community and the public.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate level skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) which includes typing basic letters, memos, and e-mails, plus things such as mail merges, flyers, spreadsheets using formulas, and creating forms and posts on social media, Must be proficient on the internet and with using Outlook or similar software.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD preferred.
Familiarity with PastPerfect and TMS is preferred.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, walk, talk, hear, stand, and use hands to operate computer, office equipment, and to handle and move items associated with the preparation of works for exhibition. The employee is occasionally required to: stoop or kneel, lift, and/or move up to 20 pounds. The duties of this position require no special vision requirements beyond normal vision.
