The Curator/Manager, Youth and Family Programs is a full-time job within Brooklyn Public Library’s BPL Presents Department. The Curator/Manager, Youth and Family Programs curates, organizes, schedules, administers, and often runs cultural (literary, music and informational) programs for young adults, children, their parents and caretakers throughout the Brooklyn Public Library system. In addition, this curator helps to coordinate publicity and evaluate these programs. They must be available to work nights and weekends as needed. This position reports to the Vice President of Arts and Culture of Brooklyn Public Library.
This is a full-time, non-union, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $115,000.
Essential Responsibilities
Develop and make available to Central Library and the branch libraries meaningful, high-quality programs for young adults, children, and their caretakers
Work with writers and artists in the children and young adult publishing world
Work with organizations providing informational programs
Forge institutional partnerships and other audience development strategies
Plan BPL participation in broad campaigns directed at youth and families
Liaise with Marketing and Communications for public relations and advertising
Liaise with Collection Development to link programs to library collections
Reach out to underserved audiences
Manage externally funded grants and insure proper reporting to funders
Write contracts with program providers and manage budgets
On occasion, supervise the work of support staff members
Works as necessary at other large-scale projects produced by BPL Presents.
Required Qualifications
B.A. required, M.L.S. preferred
Three to five years in public/educational programming in a non-profit setting, with at least two years in a managerial/coordinating position.
Ability to work effectively with others
Ability of be thoughtful and welcoming with the program’s young audience.
Organizational skills to make and carry out effective work plans, to keep records, and to administer budgets
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Demonstrated commitment to public service and an affinity for children
Knowledge
Interests in child development, children’s and young adult literature
Familiarity with the work of the library.
Demands
Create large- and small-scale events and series, such as Summer Reading Kick Off, chess tournaments, and the Nanny’s Fairytale Writing workshops, as well as branch chess classes and entertainment programs.
