JOB SUMMARY: The Custodian ensures that all CAW/M-owned and CAW/M-occupied facilities in Wayne and Medina Counties—including the Lincoln Way, Lodi, and West Salem sites—remain clean, safe, and operational for staff, students, and visitors. Reporting to the Property Maintenance Manager, this position delivers routine custodial services, light preventive maintenance, and basic building-security support while adhering to OSHA and CAW/M safety standards. The role also requires flexibility to travel between locations as program schedules dictate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
1. Maintain interior building cleanliness by sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, and vacuuming floors; disinfecting restrooms and high-touch surfaces; washing interior windows and walls; and emptying and sanitizing trash and recycling receptacles.
2. Coordinate with CAW/M staff and occasional outside groups to arrange, set up, tear down, and store tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings and special events.
3. Perform light preventive maintenance—such as replacing light bulbs, tightening hardware, and patching minor wall damage—and promptly report more significant issues to the Property Maintenance Manager.
4. Secure assigned facilities by locking doors and windows, arming alarm systems, and ensuring utilities and lights are turned off at the close of business.
5. Monitor inventories of cleaning chemicals, paper goods, and custodial equipment, requesting replenishment in a timely manner and storing materials safely in compliance with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.
6. Support seasonal and exterior upkeep by removing snow and ice from entryways, sweeping sidewalks, and assisting with basic grounds care to maintain safe approaches to the facilities.
7. Follow all OSHA and CAW/M safety protocols, use required personal protective equipment (PPE), attend mandatory safety training, and maintain current SDS documentation for custodial chemicals.
8. Respond to emergencies—such as spills, weather-related damage, or urgent facility needs—during or after normal hours as directed, taking appropriate action to protect people and property.
9. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum qualifications include:
1. High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
2. At least one (1) year of experience in commercial custodial or facilities maintenance (schools, offices, or similar settings).
3. Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under the Agency’s vehicle policy.
4. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks such as prolonged standing, walking, crouching, bending, and stooping.
5. Capacity to navigate both indoor and outdoor areas safely in all seasons (e.g., snow removal, wet floors).
6. Basic computer literacy, including the use of email and simple work-order or inventory software; familiarity with Microsoft 365 (Outlook and Word) preferred.
7. Competence in operating standard custodial and office equipment (auto scrubbers, vacuums, hand tools, copier, printer, telephone).
8. Demonstrated customer-service mindset, representing CAW/M in a friendly and professional manner when interacting with staff, students, visitors, and vendors.
9. Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team, prioritize tasks, and solve problems with minimal supervision.
10. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully, maintain composure under pressure, and help de-escalate tense situations when necessary.
11. Personal qualities of integrity, reliability, initiative, and a strong commitment to CAW/M’s mission.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Custodian works mainly inside CAW/M facilities—classrooms, offices, restrooms, and mechanical areas—with occasional outdoor tasks around entrances, sidewalks, and parking lots. The role demands frequent walking, standing, bending, ladder climbing, and lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs.; under U.S. DOL guidelines, it is classified as Medium Work. Daily duties include operating floor-care equipment that generates moderate noise and handling of cleaning agents or occasional biohazards; employees must follow PPE and Safety Data Sheet protocols. Seasonal responsibilities such as snow and ice removal expose the Custodian to weather extremes. Travel is limited to CAW/M sites within Wayne and Medina Counties via an agency vehicle or reimbursable personal vehicle—overnight or air travel is not expected—and the employee may occasionally interact with emotionally distressed individuals, requiring calm, professional communication.
