Custodian - Day Porter

Schedule: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Summary

The Custodian at Aspen Ridge Preparatory School plays a vital role in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position supports the health and well-being of our K–8 school community by performing daily cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance tasks in compliance with school policies and state safety standards.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities

• Complete a daily task sheet
• Clean and sanitize spills and messes when they occur
• Maintain exterior as needed
• Clean and polish furniture and fixtures
• Clean windows
• Assist in summer facilities projects such as floor waxing and carpet shampooing.
• Clean and disinfect classrooms, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and common areas
• Perform floor care duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and scrubbing. Use all necessary equipment to clean floors.
• Empty trash and recycling receptacles and ensure appropriate disposal
• Replenish supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
• Respond to custodial requests and urgent cleanups in a timely manner
• Report maintenance or safety issues to the appropriate staff
• Assist with room setup and takedown for school events or activities
• Follow all health, safety, and sanitation protocols as established by school and state guidelines
• Interact professionally with Staff, Students, and Visitors
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Prior 1 year minimum custodial or janitorial experience in a school or child-centered environment preferred
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks throughout the shift
• Must pass a background check and comply with school safety and conduct policies
• Willingness to take direction

Reporting Structure

Custodians report to the Facilities Manager and Head Custodian

Physical Requirements

Custodial positions have a high physical demand requiring constant movement and manual labor throughout each shift. Individuals in this position must reasonably meet all physical requirements to meet the listed duties and responsibilities.

Language Requirement 

The ability to read, write, and speak in English is a required qualification for this position. This is considered a business necessity to:

• Understand and comply with safety instructions, cleaning protocols, and emergency procedures
• Read chemical labels, signage, and custodial work orders
• Communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and during emergencies
• Maintain proper documentation and complete required training

This requirement ensures the safe and effective performance of essential job functions within a school setting.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and occasionally outdoors, and may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and moderate noise levels. The Custodian must be able to respond to the needs of a dynamic school environment that prioritizes student safety and cleanliness.
