Job Description - CV Invasive Specialist

Job Description:

The CV Invasive Specialist performs duties necessary for cardiac catheterization procedures at a technical and professional level requiring some proctoring and supervision of technical detail. The Specialist I performs a variety of technical procedures that require some independent judgment. The CV Invasive Specialist I assumes responsibility and initiative for designated areas and procedures as required. Follows Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals (ACVP) Scope of Practice or for Electrophysiology the NASPE Standards of Professional Practice for the Allied Professional in Pacing and Electrophysiology.
An RN will be present to supervise the care of patients during moderate sedation.

The shift schedule for this position is currently four 10's, Monday-Thursday from 0700-1630. Schedule is subject to change based on scheduling needs.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in procedure room preparation and post procedure turn around.
  • Develop specific knowledge with regard to invasive, diagnostic, and interventional supplies which includes assisting in inventory control. Develops specific knowledge of applications, proper use and deployment techniques including documenting hemodynamic recordings, calculations, and interpretations.
  • Provide patient education and emotional support for patients and their family members; ensure patient comfort. Foster teamwork and cohesiveness with team members and physicians.
  • Develop knowledge specific to cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, pharmacology, anatomic anomalies, and treatment options. Assess the condition of the patient, document, and inform physician of deviations from normal criteria throughout the procedure.
  • Understand and apply principles of x-ray generation and safety. Understand and demonstrate the correct operation of imaging equipment.
  • May mix and administer medications under the direction and supervision of the physician (RCIS or RCES is required to pass medications).
  • At the end of the procedure, may apply closure device, suture the sheath in place, or remove the sheath and apply pressure to obtain hemostasis.
  • Provide thorough and accurate documentation of each procedure and associated events.
  • Develop skills in operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting equipment in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Perform point of care testing and QA.
  • Accountabilities: Scrub, circulate, and monitor in diagnostic, interventional, and CRM procedures according to scope of practice documents.
    Complete procedure data entry; acquire and process imaging studies, hemodynamic assessment and calculations, intra-procedure CathPCI registry requirements, and prepare procedural reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • PALS certification for children's hospitals or ACLS certification for adults. New hires must obtain within 6 months of start.  
  • Bachelor's degree in health science with six months of health care experience (e.g., Cath Lab, EP, EMT, Paramedic, CNA, Surgical tech)
    - or –
  • Graduate of a Radiologic Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, Respiratory Therapy, or Nursing program
    - or –
  • graduate of a diploma or associate program in health science with one year of health care experience (e.g., Cath Lab, EP, EMT, Paramedic, CNA, Surgical tech)
    - or –
  • graduate of a non-programmatically accredited program in invasive cardiovascular technology which has a minimum of one year of specialty training and includes a minimum of 800 clinical hours. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Current license, where applicable.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist program,
    - and-
  • 2 years of CV Invasive Training experience.
    - and –
  • RN degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • RCES certification
  • RN license
  • Previous electrophysiology experience


Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
