Program Summary
The Community Works Project (CWP) is a 2-agency collaborative project that provides job preparation and placement services to participants enrolled in the TANF (Temporary Assistance to Need Families) program who are required to engage in the JOBS (Job Opportunities Basic Skills) program. CWP serves ODHS (Oregon Department of Human Services) District 2 locations.

Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated, adaptable, and student-centered ESL and Adult Basic Education Instructor to join our team. This role supports Adult English Language Learning through English language classes, English language tutoring, and Employment focused English language tutoring. This role will also teach basic literacy classes including reading, writing, spelling, and speaking (8th grade level or lower) and basic math classes including arithmetic functions, percentages, understanding tables and graphs, and other basic math concepts (8th grade or lower).

Essential Functions

  • Design and deliver engaging lessons for adult learners in ESL and Adult Basic Education, both in person and online
  • Create and adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet the needs, goals, and skill levels of diverse learners
  • Conduct placement tests to determine proficiency level when first starting to work with new participants, at regular intervals, and at program exit, to assess their progress
  • Foster a supportive and respectful classroom environment that promotes participation and persistence
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and completion
  • Submit regular reports and documentation in compliance with TANF program requirements
  • Communicate effectively with ODHS Family Coaches and CWP program staff to support participants overall success
  • Incorporate trauma informed and culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Support learners in building confidence, setting educational goals, and pursuing next steps such as job training, or further education.

Secondary Functions

  • As necessary, staff the Career Center which includes but is not limited to welcoming participants and guiding them to the appropriate services, including advocating or interpreting on their behalf when necessary
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience required
  • Minimum 3-4 years of classroom-based instruction experience required
  • Experience working with underserved populations including BIPOC Communities and/or Immigrants and Refugees
  • Familiarity with virtual learning platforms

Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements

  • Hybrid or Office setting job
  • Positions require some analysis of problems or decision-making ability
  • Work under close supervision
  • Well protected environment with minimal hazards or obstacles
  • Stable work schedule with no fluctuations

Supervisory Responsibilities

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
