Cylinder Technician

The Cylinder Technician is responsible for the disassembly, inspection, repair, rebuilding, assembly, and testing of hydraulic cylinders as well as pumps, motors, and valves. This associate ensures that hydraulic components meet factory specifications and customer requirements by performing high-quality repairs in both shop and field environments. The role also involves diagnosing hydraulic issues, supporting pneumatic and mechanical systems, and contributing to overall shop operations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Disassemble and evaluate hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, and valves to identify required repairs and replacement parts.
• Repair, rebuild, and reassemble hydraulic cylinders and components to specifications and customer requirements.
• Hone, polish, or machine cylinder barrels and rods as necessary to restore function.
• Assemble hydraulic and pneumatic hose assemblies and systems per schematics and specifications.
• Diagnose problems with hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems and perform corrective repairs.
• Perform pressure testing and quality checks on completed cylinders, pumps, motors, and valves according to established procedures.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on hydraulic systems and test stands.
• Assist in machine shop operations as needed, including lathe, vertical mill, drill press, and related equipment.
• Weld, fabricate, and adjust parts as required for cylinder repair.
• Maintain test stands, tools, and equipment in accordance with ISO and company procedures.
• Record required documentation of repairs, parts used, and testing results.
• Support field service operations at customer sites, including equipment installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment by following company safety policies and procedures.
• Conserve resources by using equipment, materials, and supplies efficiently.
• Assist with warehouse operations such as shipping, receiving, and inventory when necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of hydraulic cylinder repair, including disassembly, inspection, honing, and reassembly.
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics, technical drawings, and service instructions.
• Hands-on mechanical aptitude with ability to use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
• Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
• Basic electrical troubleshooting knowledge preferred.
• Proficiency with precision measuring tools to verify tolerances.
• Ability to weld and perform basic fabrication work as needed.
• Ability to operate cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to document work accurately.
• Good communication skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Ability to recognize and correct unsafe conditions.
• Computer literacy for recording repair documentation and quality forms.

Education and Experience: 

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; vocational/technical training preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of mechanic experience; hydraulic repair experience strongly preferred.
• Experience with hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, and valves required.
• Certified forklift operator preferred, or ability to become certified.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record required.
• Training provided after hire as needed: ISO procedures, safety, quality, hydraulic product training, cylinder repair, lathe operation, honing, and test stand operation.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally more than 100 pounds.
• Manual dexterity to disassemble and reassemble small and large components.
• Visual acuity including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to work indoors in a shop environment with occasional outdoor work.
