Job Description - DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

We are looking for a motivated and skilled Database Administrator. You will play a key role in the delivery, operation, and maintenance of secure and high-performing database infrastructure and services.
In this role, you will focus on ensuring robust, sustainable, and secure database environments, supporting both on-premises and cloud infrastructure (primarily Microsoft Azure). You’ll report to the Head of Data Science and work closely with an international team of data scientists working on public policy projects.

Academic Background

University degree in information systems, database management, computer science, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
Relevant certifications (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, Azure) are an asset.
1. Technical Experience
Experience in database administration with Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL.
Knowledge of Python to execute data workflows, perform quality assurance checks, and support integration with databases.
Solid understanding of database security, automation, and monitoring.
Familiar with scripting (e.g. PowerShell) and backup/recovery tools.
Experience with database reporting and visualization tools (e.g. Power BI, RedGate, SquaredUp).
1. Tools & Platforms
Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, Windows Server
Some knowledge of Python (for re-running data workflows and quality assurance)
PowerShell, Azure DevOps, GitHub
Monitoring and reporting: SCOM, RedGate, SquaredUp, Power BI
Backup: NetBackup or equivalent solutions
1. Communication & Languages
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Database Administration & Infrastructure

Lead the design, setup, and maintenance of hybrid database infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on Azure SQL and the broader Microsoft Azure ecosystem.
Use Python-based scripts and workflows to support automated data updates, quality assurance routines, and integration with external data sources.
Support the integration and maintenance of emerging database technologies, including vector-based databases used for semantic search, AI workflows, and large language model (LLM) applications.
Provide expert database administration, ensuring systems meet performance, security, and availability requirements.
Monitor performance, manage storage and backup solutions, and respond to incidents and outages.
Manage database systems across the full lifecycle — including upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning.
Ensure tools and monitoring systems are in place to prevent or respond quickly to technical issues.
1. Technical & Team Contribution
Provide input to planning and budgeting processes, including licensing and cloud service needs.
Contribute to internal best practices, documentation, and knowledge-sharing activities.
Work closely with our data scientists, being resposible to update and maintain databases using existing scripts and workflows, ensuring data is refreshed accurately and on schedule.
