Job Description - Day Camp Counselor

TITLE: Day Camp Counselor


REPORTS TO: Day Camp Director


DIVISION: Recreation Services


FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt


CATEGORY: Seasonal (May-August)


PAY RANGE: $15.00/hr                                


WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday 8:15am – 4:00pm

SUMMARY


The Day Camp Counselor delivers engaging, safe, and inclusive programming for children. Counselors are responsible for planning and executing activities while ensuring the well-being of participants. They will maintain a clean and organized environment and act as positive role models for camp participants.


 


QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age and/or a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Prior experience working with children, preferred.


Certifications:



  • CPR/AED certification required or able to obtain shortly after being hired.


Skills and Competencies:



  • Must possess enthusiasm, creativity and the ability to communicate with people of all ages.

  • Be flexible, willing to try new ideas and be organized, self-motivated and be consistently punctual to work.

  • Contribute to a child’s physical, intellectual, personal, emotional and social development.

  • Coordinate and work on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Provide good customer service internally and externally.


Other Requirements:



  • Valid driver’s license.


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Plan and implement diverse, age-appropriate activities, including archery, canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, games, and social activities.

  • Prepare and organize daily supplies and equipment; inform the Camp Director of supply needs in advance.

  • Supervise and ensure the safety of a group of 8-10 campers, addressing behavioral or safety concerns as they arise.

  • Maintain a clean and organized camp environment, including sanitizing tables and equipment before and after activities.

  • Swim with campers and actively participate in their activities.

  • Document and report any accidents, incidents, or safety hazards to the Camp Director or Recreation Supervisor.

  • Maintain open communication with parents, addressing concerns or referring them to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Serve as a positive role model by exhibiting professionalism, wearing the staff uniform and photo ID, and adhering to camp policies.

  • Encourage participants and parents to complete program evaluations to improve camp quality.


 


MARGINAL FUNCTIONS



  • Respond to complaints and suggestions promptly and professionally. 



  • Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and safety programs as required.



  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or Recreation Supervisor.


 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS



  • Must be able to perform manual labor with varying degrees of physical exertion.

  • May frequently be required to walk, sit, talk and hear.

  • May frequently be required to climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • Must have specific vision abilities required for this job: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.


 


WORKING CONDITIONS



  • Work effectively in unfavorable conditions, under deadlines, and while managing complaints.

  • Maintain professionalism and communicate effectively with staff, customers, and the community.

  • Exposure to controlled indoor environments and varying outdoor weather conditions.

  • Occasionally encounter elevated noise levels, allergens, and repetitive tasks.

  • Adapt to environments with large crowds and public venues.

  • Ability to train coworkers on safe work practices.

  • Apply basic math, reading, and writing skills.

  • Follow detailed procedures to achieve desired results.

  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving and data analysis skills.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

  • Execute supervisor directions effectively and safely.

  • Exhibit sound judgment and safety awareness.
