Job Description - Day Camp Leader - Seasonal (Parks)

Job Details:

SALARY:
Starting at $15.50 per hour

APPLICATIONS ARE HELD ON FILE FOR 45 DAYS.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Day Camp Leader is responsible for leading, and supervising recreational and enrichment activities for children ages 5–12 in a structured day camp setting. This position ensures a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment while promoting positive behavior and teamwork among participants. Camp Leaders assist with daily operations, including activity setup and cleanup, and are expected to interact professionally with children, parents, and staff. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with flexible hours Monday through Friday.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and supervise children ages 5–12 in recreational and enrichment activities in a day camp setting.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Assist with the setup, organization, and cleanup of daily camp activities and materials.
  • Communicate effectively with campers and team members to support a positive camp experience.
  • Serve as a role model while enforcing camp rules and promoting respectful behavior.
  • Administer basic first aid in accordance with department guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Attempt to resolve child behavior issues at the lowest level prior to escalation to management.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure clean and safe work areas in recreation facilities and grounds.
  • Report all suspected cases of child abuse per training guidelines when required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of child development principles and age-appropriate recreational activities for youth ages 5–12.
  • Knowledge of basic safety practices and emergency response procedures in a camp or recreational setting.
  • Knowledge of group management techniques and strategies for maintaining positive behavior.
  • Knowledge of inclusive practices that support children from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Knowledge of the structure and goals of youth programs in a community or municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures
  • Skill in communicating effectively with children, parents, and coworkers in a positive and professional manner.
  • Skill in leading and supervising group activities for youth in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Skill in resolving minor conflicts and managing behavior in a calm and constructive way.
  • Skill in adapting to changing situations and maintaining flexibility in a fast-paced camp setting.
  • Skill in organizing and facilitating recreational activities that are age-appropriate and engaging.
  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Skill with organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to supervise and engage children in a variety of recreational and educational activities.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and positive environment for youth in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency or high-stress situations.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with children, parents, and coworkers
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general instructions.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.


Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • Must be age 16 or older.
  • Successful completion of the City of Arlington’s CPR and First Aid training required upon hire.
  • Complete child sexual abuse detection and prevention training upon hire.
